 Just Think: Why is controlling New Orleans important for our country? Did we have control of New Orleans in the late 1700s / early 1800s?  Today, I will be able to explain how events in Europe influenced the U.S. in the early 1800s. I will also be able to tentatively explain how the U.S. acquires the Louisiana Territory.  Turn in chapter 9 assignments (9.1, 9.3, 9.4 and poster)  10.1 is past due (10 pts).  Check your current grade, (if you don’t like your grade: turn in the assignments, study, and ask for help…not during current class time).

 The French, led by their ambitious general Napoleon Bonaparte, agree to the secret Treaty of San Ildefonso of 1800 giving them control of the Louisiana Territory.

 Napoleon becomes Emperor of France in  He continues his costly conquest of Europe.  Haitian Revolt led by Toussaint L’Ouverture occurred in 1801: Fallout.  French forces are able to regain control of the island, but eventually the Haitian win and declare their independence from France.  Haiti was France’s most profitable colony in the Western Hemisphere (Sugar)  Remember, Napoleon is leading a major war in Europe and needs money.  Agrees to sell the U.S. the Louisiana Territory.
