TODAY’S AGENDA: BASIC INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY VOCABULARY Computer Hardware Motherboard CPU and Memory Peripheral Devices Software Operating System Directories Applications

OBJECTIVE Getting to know the inside of your computer.

COMPUTER We use them everyday, but what are they? What was the inspiration behind their invention? A computer is a piece of technology based on the human brain.

HARDWARE VERSUS SOFTWARE The hardware of a computer is its physical or permanent equipment (Body).  EXAMPLE: motherboard, CPU, memory chips, peripherals Software is a set of instructions that directs the computer to accomplish a task (Thoughts).  EXAMPLE: Operating systems, Applications A CD is hardware, but a file on a rewritable disk containing instructions is software. The software (program) might be on the disk today but erased tomorrow when a new program is written on the disk. It is clear that the CD is permanent and the software is temporary.

MOTHERBOARD The motherboard is the most complicated piece of equipment inside the computer. Some of the items housed by the motherboard include: CPU (Central Processing Unit) RAM (Random Access Memory) Chips Cache Memory - controls memory access speed BIOS (Basic Input / Output System) Chip - controls basic hardware functions and power supply connections to provide electricity to the system components

MOTHERBOARD (BASIC)

MOTHERBOARD (ADVANCED)

CPU AND MEMORY REVIEW Hardware = Body Software = Thoughts CPU (Central Processing Unit) = Brain In addition to the CPU, the motherboard contains two kinds of memory chips: ROM (Read Only Memory) and RAM (Random Access Memory) ROM chips have programming permanently stored on them however Flash ROM is rewritable.

CPU AND MEMORY

RAM memory chips are installed onto the motherboard They hold both data and programming instructions while they are being processed by the CPU. ROM chips contain permanent (long- term)memory whereas, RAM is temporary (short-term).

REVIEW QUESTIONS KAHOOT.IT Introduction to Computer Operation 2015

DISCUSSION QUESTIONS What part of the body was the computer designed after? Give an example of computer hardware. Give an example of computer software. What does the CPU do? What does ROM stand for? What does RAM stand for? Where are memory chips installed?

DISCUSSION QUESTIONS What part of the body is the computer designed after? The brain Give some example of computer hardware. Motherboard, keyboard, mouse Give some examples of computer software. Applications

DISCUSSION QUESTIONS What does the CPU do? “Think” What does ROM stand for? Read Only Memory What does RAM stand for? Random Access Memory Where are memory chips installed? On the motherboard

Peripheral Devices

PERIPHERAL DEVICES Peripheral devices connect to and communicate with the computer either internally or externally. Although they can attach to it, they are not part of the motherboard. External peripheral devices communicate with what is inside the computer through cables attached to the case at a connection called a port.

PERIPHERAL EXAMPLES Video card - a board inside the computer that controls the video display (monitor). Keyboard - the primary input device of a computer. Mouse - a pointing device used to move the cursor and make selections on the screen. All non-wireless external peripheral devices communicate with the computer through cables attached at the ports.

SOFTWARE Software is a set of instructions written by programmers to instruct computers to perform specific tasks. There are two types of programs: Operating systems (OS) and Applications (Apps). Generally a computer has one OS and several applications.

SOFTWARE

OPERATING SYSTEMS (OS) AND APPLICATIONS (APPS) Stored on the hard drive, the OS supports a computers basic functions such as scheduling tasks, executing applications and controlling peripherals. Apps, also stored on the hard drive, execute user commands. They are software programs used to create files.

FILE NAMES A file name has two parts: Filename – name you give your file Extension – appended letters the computer uses to tell which app created the file EXAMPLE: Word files use.doc or.docx.

HARDWARE

HARD DRIVE A hard drive is a self-contained storage device with a read - write mechanism plus one or more hard disks, inside a sealed unit. It is the primary computer storage device. The hard drive is a piece of hardware that stores the OS, Apps and files.

HARD DRIVES Internal External

DISCUSSION QUESTIONS Give some examples of external peripheral devices. What are ports used for? Name the two types of programs? What do they do? What types of information are contained on the hard drive?

DISCUSSION QUESTIONS Give some examples of external peripheral devices. Mouse, Keyboard What are ports used for? To connect external peripherals Name the two types of programs? What do they do? OS – controls the basic functions of the computer Applications – executes user commands What types of information are contained on the hard drive? OS, Apps, Files (Long-term memory)

DIRECTORIES

A directory is a table on the hard drive that contains a list of files that are stored on the disk. The root directory is the first directory on the drive.  On PC’s the root directory is C Drive “C:\” by default.  On Mac directories are shown are folders.

DIRECTORIES There are other directories sometimes called subdirectories or child directories. Any directory can have files and / or other directories listed in it. You can organize your files by creating different directories and folders.

Class review

REVIEW What OS are we using? What is a hard drive? Name the two (2) parts of a filename. What are directories used for?

REVIEW What OS are we using? Windows 7 Control Panel > System and Security > System What is a hard drive? An independent storage unit capable of reading and writing data Name the two (2) parts of an application’s filename. Give an example. Name and extension What are directories used for? To organize your work
