Today’s essay is a brief and interesting piece about one aspect of Abraham Lincoln’s life. Yesterday’s article examined Lincoln’s leadership qualities. Today’s article addresses Lincoln’s sense of humor. But before we read, I am eager to hear your opinion about something.... Does a person need a good sense of humor to be an effective President? What do we mean by the term “assertion”? [Hint: You might want to start a sheet for ongoing Cornell Notes....] AssertionA statement that makes a particular claim (claims to be true) about something or someone Are assertions factually reliable? That depends on what information the author provides as evidence to back up each claim. As we read today’s essay, you are to play detective. Find as many “assertions” as you can, then look for evidence to support each assertion. Jot down both the assertion and any evidence you can find to back up each assertion.
