Definition It is controlling the kind, amount, location, movement, and timing of the various commodities used in and produced by the industrial enterprise.

Function of materials management  Materials planning  Purchasing of materials  Reducing store –keeping and warehousing  Transportation and materials handling  Standardisation simplification and value analysis

Imporantance of material management  It helps to avoid wastage to a greater extent.  It help in efficient and judicious purchasing, minimising wastages in handling, storing and transporting the material and the utilisation of materials very efficiently.  It helps reducing the cost of finished goods and maintaining the quality.

Objective of material management  To ensure uniform flow of materials for production.  To ensure right quality of products at the right time.  To ensure and maintain good relationship with customer  To reduce material cost

Contd.  To increase the profit of the concern.  To contribute towards competitivess.  It also aims at procuring and providing materials of desired quality at the lowest possible overall cost of the concern.

Integrated materials management Management of materials is one of the most important function of a business organisation. its importance may vary from one industry to another but it is most important for a manufacturing organisation as it is directly linked with profitability.
