Using Moodle This is a rough draft of instructions for teachers to use Moodle in lieu of the in- service that is held periodically. Call me if you need to ask anything

Log in here The first thing to do is log in. Check your for this.

Find your class and click on it.

Click the turn editing on button. This is so important!

After you turn the editing on, you’ll see options appear (see to the left). The arrows allow you to indent or move. The x deletes, the

Icons for editing This icon will indent and move items in. This moves items up and down. If you add something, it always goes to the bottom and you have to move it up. You edit the words of the lesson with this. delete Hide this lesson from students.

There are boxes after each section for editing that section. There are also icons at the end of each lesson section. This moves things up and down, hides, and highlights activities. Click the “add resource” box and you usually will choose “link to a file or website”.

Name of the lesson. description You can either just put in the URL you want to link to or you can upload a file off your hard drive. Click save.

Click upload a file. Browse and find the file on your hard drive. Upload the file you want to use. It will show up in the list. Put a check mark beside the uploaded file and click choose. The box will go away and write the file name in the box.

After choosing the file, it will write it in. Always, choose new window. Then choose save and return to course. This might be an audio or video file, as well as, a document. I have more information on the last slides about uploading files. You can upload your Powerpoints this way.

Choose upload a single file if you are building a way for a student to do an assignment and send it to you. The computer will not grade this assignment. A teacher will have to grade it.

title Assignment here. Disable both Change to 200 MB Save and return.

If you want the computer to grade your quiz, download Hot Potatoes. It will give a warning about no support, but it’s ok.

Hot Potatoes You will click on the circle and then this square will appear. Click the type of test you want to create. You might also look under options if there are some special test characteristics that you want to ensure will be part of the test. Suggestion: I’d start with a multiple choice test and then upload. You can move to the harder ones later.

After you create your test, choose Hot Potato quiz.

Upload your saved Hot Potato quiz. directions Disable Save and return. Uploading a hot potato.

This should get you started. We will deal with sound, video, gradebook, the chat, google and sites, and making a class roll on January 12 th. Call me if you need help If you are ready for sound and video, the next slides have to do with my suggestions.

For audio or podcasts, download the “free” audacity at You could also use the Windows media player. The record button Stop button Play button The sound will need to be exported as an MP3. There’s a trick to this. See next slide.

Enabling Audacity to export mp3 or mp4 files Not only do you need to download Audacity, you also need to download a file called LAME MP3 encoder. This file download is blocked at school. You have to do this at home. Save to a CD or jumpdrive and bring it to school and drag the file over to your audacity folder. If you are on a home computer. Download to the audacity folder. Return to Audacity and click export, the first time and only the first time, it will ask for the LAME location. Browse to the audacity folder with LAME (or where ever you put it). Click and locate. It will then go on and save and export as a MP3 file. You can now make all the sound files you want. Return to Moodle and when you upload a file, browse find the sound file and click upload. See next slide.

For video, use JING. It is a free download (don’t pay anything). The free one is actually as good as the paid version. Then you can tape anything on your screen. If you want to add voice or music, connect a mic (if not already connected). Just save and you are ready to upload.
