TERRAMIN AUSTRALIA Limited Angas Zinc Project

The Angas Zinc Project: noise Noise issue is a “work in progress” –Final noise outcomes and decisions awaiting final designs. –These hinge on the Mining Lease and MARP approvals. –Work on noise will be ongoing.

Noise: What is it? Noise and soundNoise and sound Made up of different componentsMade up of different components –Loudness (measured in decibels; dB(A)) –Frequency (or pitch)(measured in hertz; Hz) CharacteristicsCharacteristics –Tone, fluctuation, impulsiveness

Noise: legislative framework Environment Protection (Industrial noise) Policy (INP)Environment Protection (Industrial noise) Policy (INP) Area of development adjacent to existing residences is “Urban residential with some manufacturing industry…”Area of development adjacent to existing residences is “Urban residential with some manufacturing industry…” Prescribed limit: 58 dB(A) (day), 50 dB(A) (night)Prescribed limit: 58 dB(A) (day), 50 dB(A) (night) General duty of care under Environment Protection Act

INP: penalties Penalties are applied by the INP for tone, impulsiveness, fluctuation Planning penalty: 5 dB(A) Characteristic penalty: 5 dB(A) Gives new maximum allowable limits: Day 48 dB(A) Night 40 dB(A)

Noise: indicative measures Boeing dB Jack hammer 120 dB Lawn mower 100 dB Garbage truck 80 dB Normal conversation 60 dB Background noise 40 dB Whispering 30 dB

Current noise studies Noise monitoring at two sites (site office and rear of site) 7 day period September 2005 Average noise 50 dB during the day, dB at night Does not include quarry noise

Current ambient noise

Angas Zinc Project: potential issues Variety of noise sources Mine –Vent rise fan –Trucks Mill –Crushing Plant –Front-end-loaders –Grinding Mill –Air blower and compressor –Pumps and stirrers

Benchmarking Visit to mines located in towns Stawell –Underground vent rise fans –Use of topography Kagara zinc –Use of sheds to minimise noise –Low noise blowers Ballarat Gold –Approach to noise containment

Angas Zinc Project: General mitigation Sound mounds (bunds) Use of natural topography as noise barrier Vegetation visual screens Enclosed sheds for plant Mufflers on machinery White noise generation on reversing sounds Day time only operation for some plant and machinery Day time truck delivery & despatch

Mine: Current design initiatives Twin underground vent rise fans. Selection of “low noise” volvo trucks. Deeper boxcut to contain vehicle noise. Use of “white noise” reversing indicators. Sound mounds around boxcut and roadways. Underground noise not an issue.

Mill Design The design of mill is heavily influenced by environmental considerations Final location still to be finalised, work in progress Natural lie of land will be used to help attenuate sound Mill forced out of pit, crusher to remain Buildings positioned to minimise noise transmission Engineering contract specifies noise performance criteria

Mill Design Buildings positioned to cut noise transmission

Mine Design Crushing on day shift only(cost $2-3 million)

Mill: Current design initiatives Crushing only on day shift (cost $2-3 million) Sound attenuation on compressor Roof & wall on SAG mill Roof & walls on flotation circuit Low noise air blower Sound mounds Capital allowance for more attenuation during commissioning

Current quarry

Current Quarry: Status Monday 22 nd May 2006 site audit Volvo trucks Loader Crusher Screens

Noise modelling: Bassett Acoustic Matthew Stead; National Manager Acoustics –Penrice Soda Products solids recovery –Holden Paint Shop noise –AWB Rain Bulk Stores –Penola Bypass Noise modelling performed using SA EPA accepted models Indicative- based on initial scenarios Based on noise produced by mill, trucks & vent rise fan Based on climate for region: typical worst case scenario winds

Modelled noise: Daytime

Modelled noise: Night time

Noise modelling: Bassett Acoustic New round of modelling underway using –current configuration of plant –based on noise provided by mill, selected trucks & underground suppliers –Still based on typical worst case scenario for winds

Standards and Targets Proposed allowable limits –48 dB(A) Day time (7.00 am pm) –40 dB(A) Night time (10.00 pm – 7.00 am) Outcome is to prevent public nuisance impacts from noise emanating from the operating site The monitoring points to be reviewed from time to time with the CCC The plant will be designed to better these targets

Mill Design
