2 Cyclone Nargis Response Cyclone Nargis struck Myanmar on 2 nd and 3 rd May 2008 with wind speed of mph. The most affected areas were 7 townships in Ayeyawaddy division and 40 townships in Yangon division.

5 The Ministers in charge of respective areas were appointed and they supervised relief tasks of storm-hit regions thoroughly. 7 based-line camps, 6 transit-line camps and 12 front-line camps in coastal areas were opened and relief supplies were distributed with quick momentum. The relief tasks response to Nargis was made with the strength of armed-forces as a main force.

6 Since 6 May 2008, various supplies items for relief were donated for the affected areas by (29) countries and (10) organizations by air and sea. Moreover, local people including department concerned, social organization, families of military and well wishers from respective states and divisions have provided cash and kind for the storm victims. International/ Local Donation and Arrival of supplies for relief

7 Relief supplies received from local donors is tons and from International donors is tons till now. The total amount of International donation is US$ , Euro , S$ , Thai Baht , FEC , Rupee 7126, Malay Ringgit 300. The total amount of local donation in cash is million kyats. Relief Supplies

8 There are (2) central relief camps in Yangon and Pathein township, (3) transition relief camps in Maubin, Myaungmya, Wakaema, (6) transition and distribution relief camps in Hainggyi Island, Pyapon, Labutta, Bogale, Dedaye, and Mawlamyinegyun townships and (12) front line camps at disaster affected areas. 9 Relief, rehabilitation and disaster preparedness Relief work. Reconstruction of ravaged villages, renovation of roads, bridges and communication links and opening of temporary clinics and schools. Steps are to be taken the long-term disaster preparedness.

15 To effectively implement emergency relief tasks for the storm victims in 7 storm-hit townships of Ayeyarwaddy Division, the relief camps were opened on 6 th May There were over 3000 victims in Pathein Camp, over 11,000 victims in Myaungmya Camp, over 3700 victims in Maubin Camp and over 2000 victims in Wakhema Camp, providing them emergency relief assistance. The relief camps were also opened in the 7 storm-hit townships respectively. Resettlement tasks for storm victims

16 On 7 th May 2008, the 619 relief camps were opened in the affected areas in Yangon Division, providing 566,184 victims with emergency relief assistance. After the damaged houses were rebuilt and drinkable water was available in the storm-hit villages. With the programmes of WFP and Donors, rice is being provided to the respective villages.

17 In agriculture sector, the programmes on pumping salty water and providing power-tillers, cattle, paddy strains and fertilizers were conducted to restore agricultural works in time. In fishery sector, fishing boats and fishing nets were provided. Likewise, loan funds were provided to resume salt-production. In health sector, the health personnels from Ministry of Health and the medical teams from abroad went to the villages and conducted health care.

18 Moreover, the mobile health teams stationed on floating hospitals provided health care. To timely open the schools, the temporary shelters were constructed as school buildings and permanent schools were also constructed. In addition, storm and flood resistance buildings are also being constructed.

19 Rehabilitation of housing The cost of transport is being provided by the Government and one house costs only kyats(about US$ 600). Up to now, (7638) houses have been donated by well- wishers. The storm-hit people were able to be systematically shifted to the (4314) houses built in Ayeyarwaddy and Yangon Divisions. Right after Nargis, in the storm-hit regions, 69 construction companies involved in the renovation and reconstruction tasks of schools, hospitals, community buildings. In this regard, the State spend billion kyats.

20 Moreover, Taiwan Buddhist Tzu Chi Foundation is building 742 houses in Kunkgyangon township, which was one of the storm-hit areas. International Organization for Migration (IOM) is building 6700 houses in Pyapon, Mawlamyainegyun and Bogale townships. German Agro Action (GAA) is building houses for 7500 families in 76 villages for Bogale Township.

21 Five main highways Now, a network of five main highways is under construction in the seaside regions in order that local rural folks can lead a secure life, regional development and prevention of natural disaster. These five main highways are;- Maubin- Yelelay- Shwetawmaw – Kyaikpi - Mawlamyaingyun Highway (43 miles 7 phlons) Mawlamyaingyun- Hlaingpone- Thitpoke- Kwinpauk- Pyinsalu Highway (52 miles) Labutta- Thingangyi- Pyinsalu Highway(35.2 miles) Bogale-Kyeinchaung- Kadonkani Highway(39 miles) Labutta-Thongwa-Oatwin-Htaiksun Highway(37 miles)

22 Storm Shelters The Government has planned to construct storm shelters. One school building and one hospital building as durable storm shelters which hold 500 people each will be constructed in the following 17 respective areas and there will be 34 buildings altogether. The estimated cost of a storm-resistance building which holds 500 people is USD

23 Ministry of Social Welfare, Relief and Resettlement has already established temporary training schools for orphans and children who are separated from families, in Myaungmya and Maubin townships in the Cyclone Nargis affected areas and we take care of them. Social Welfare Services
