Drills

1. Firm grip on drill 2. Unplug drill before removing or installing drill bit 3. Do not wear loose clothing 4. Secure the work firmly 5. Wear safety glasses 6. Make sure drill is properly grounded 7. Do not stand on wet surface when using a power tool

Grinders

Grinders(wire wheel) 1. Eye protection must be worn at all times. Safety glasses and Full Face shield recommended 2. All guards must be properly adjusted. 3. The tool rest must be adjusted to 1/8 from the wheel. 4. Do not grind on the side of the grinding wheel.

Grinders (continue) 5. Spark deflector or top guard must be within 1/8 of wheel. 6. Small pieces should be held with vise grip type pliers. 7. A wheel that is excessively worn or cracked should be discarded. 8. The glass safety shield should be clean, 9. Stand to one side when starting the machine.

Impact wrenches 1. Safety glasses 2. Use only Impact sockets 3. Do not over tighten, Know the torque of the bolt you are tightening.

Floor Jack

Jacks 1. Inspect before using (oil leaks, missing or loose parts) 2. Look up the proper lift points if you do not know where to lift the car. 3. Make sure the jack is secure and properly aligned under the car. 4. Apply park brake or block wheels so car will not roll 5. Never raise car while someone is under it

Jacks (continue) 6. After you start to raise the car examine your lift points double check to make sure it is secure plus properly aligned 7. Always use a jack stand Jack Stand

Jacks (continue) 8. If possible use the service jack as a “backup” to your vehicle’s jack stands. Bring the saddle just to the lifting point and lock.

Hoists

1. Inspect your lift daily 2. Do not override the operating control 3. Always keep lift area free of obstructions and debris 4. Ask your instructor for demonstration and training before using.

Hoists(continue) 5. Make sure vehicle is centered and secured before raising it up into the air. 6. Make sure locks are engaged before walking underneath 7. Before Lowering make sure area is clear and it will not hit anything.

Jet Spray 1. Safety glasses 2. Rubber gloves 3. Remember very, very hot 4. Ask your instructor for demonstration and training before using.

Cold tank (carburetor cleaner) 1. Safety glasses 2. Rubber gloves 3. Rinse off in solvent tank

Shop air/Blow guns Safety Blow gun Rubber tip blow gun

Shop air/Blow guns 1. Safety glasses 2. Do not spin bearings 3. Never aim an air hose at another student or at yourself 4. Be careful blowing off parts with blind holes it can redirect the air back at you.

Battery charger

1. Safety glasses 2. Connect and disconnect when charger is off 3. Slow charge 4. Batteries emit hydrogen and oxygen gases that can explode when a spark occurs. 5. Ask your instructor for demonstration and training before using.

Tire Changer

1. Safety glasses 2. Use correct lifting technique 3. Use a rubber lube to mount and dismount tires 4. Ask your instructor for demonstration and training before using.

Disc & Drum Brake lathe

Disc & Drum Brake lathe 1. Safety glasses 2. Know proper procedures for operation of lathe before using. 3. Watch a demonstration from the instructor.

Solvent tank 1. Safety glasses 2. Rubber gloves 3. Clean up any spills

Glass Beading Cabinet It’s Like a sand blaster But we use glass. Not as Course (Softer finish)

Glass beads 1. Make sure item to be glass beaded are free of water, oil, and greases 2. Blow off items with air before opening the door 3. Do not point blasting nozzle towards glass 4. Ask your instructor for demonstration and training before using.

Glass beads (continue) 5. Do not use air nozzle when door is open, close door when done. 6. If you blow off an item outside of the glass beader, please use eye protection.

Valve grinder

1. Safety glasses 2. Know proper procedures for operation of valve grinder before using. 3. Ask your instructor for demonstration and training before using.

Gasoline 1. Store in an approved container 2. Wipe up spills immediately 3. Never use as a cleaner. 4. When opening fuel lines use safety glasses, relieve fuel pump pressure and wrap a rag around the fuel line.

Car exhaust 1. Hook up exhaust hoses and turn on fan or have exhaust hose go outside the shop 2. Make sure car exhaust does not leak along the exhaust pipe. Run car outside if it does.

Soldering Guns

Soldering Guns 1. Always wear approved eye protection. 2. Work in a well-ventilated area and avoid inhaling soldering fumes. 3. Observe all rules for handling hot materials. 4. Do not flip excess molten solder off the tip of solder gun. Wipe it off with a piece of steel wool.

Soldering Guns (continue) 5. Do not stand in wet areas while using the solder gun. 6. Never leave the solder gun unattended with the electrical cord plugged in. 7. Always disconnect cord and allow the tip to cool before changing soldering tips. 8. Soldering flux can cause burns. Clean up flux immediately.

Soldering Guns (continue) 9. In case of acid burns, flush immediately with water. (Use baking soda to neutralize acids.) 10. Never use solder gun with worn or exposed wiring or a cracked plastic cover/handle.

Liquids spilled on floor Clean up immediately with Pig mat, paper towel, rag or floor dry
