Measurements

Measurements (Fractional) Fractional measurements are called out in terms of feet and inches Example  5 feet, 3 and a half inches Same as  5’- 3 ½” Equal division of the inch can be 1/2 ’s, 1/4 ’s, 1/8’s, 1/16’s or 1/32’s Wood working and cabinet making usually measures as close as the 1/16 th of an inch.

Tape Measure Tape Lock

Speed Square

A carpenter will always have this tool available. It fits well in a apron/ carpenter’s belt You can quickly lay out angles for roof rafters It quickly gives you 90 and 45 degree angles You can use it as a cutting guide for a skill saw

Wood workers / Small square

Common in a wood shop Used to lay out a square line or check if a project is square or not. Small enough that it can be used inside projects

Framing or Carpenters Square 16” on one axis and 24” on the other. Studs that are on the inside of a wall are commonly set at 16” or 24”

Framing or Carpenters Square Carpenters use this large square to lay out stairways, and roof rafters They commonly use it to lay out straight lines on wood parts to be cut. In wood shop we would use it to check if table tops are square or not.

French or Irregular Curve Set

French or Irregular curve Definition  A French curve is a flat drafting instrument with curved edges and several scroll- shaped cutouts, used as a guide in drawing curves. Example  A wood worker may use a French curve to draw the rounded corners of a new wall shelf

Marking Gauge Head Stock Beam Pin / Knife

Marking Gauge Definition  A marking gauge is used in woodworking and metalworking to mark out lines parallel to an edge on the part. It consist of a head stock, beam, and a marking pin. Example  In a wood shop I would use a marking gauge lay out a line where I would cut with a saw.

Combination Square Ruler & Straight Edge Level Marking Pin 45 Degrees 90 Degrees Slide and lock body to set depth

Outside Calipers Tension Spring Thumb Screw Legs

Outside Calipers

In wood shop we would use outside calipers to measure the thickness of a board after it comes out of the planer We would commonly use outside calipers with the wood lathe to check the diameter of a baseball bat, a bowl, or a lamp when they are being turned out.

Inside Calipers

Measuring diameter on the inside of a pipe

Inside Calipers In a wood shop inside calipers are generally used to check the inside diameter of a bowl that is being turned on a lathe

Compass Adjustment Thumb Screw Pivot Pin Graphite Used to draw circles or arches

Trammel Points Used for large circles or arches

Dividers Leap frog to lay out distance Lays out distance

Dividers Would use these in a wood shop to check the distance between two points. Look similar to inside calipers but have sharp points instead of out turned ends on the legs.

Protractor Degree Angles

Protractor with a Sliding T- Bevel Use the protractor to set your angle on the sliding T-Bevel

Sliding T- Bevel The Sliding T- Bevel is used to find what an existing angle is, or used with a protractor to set new angles. Tension Wing Nut

Sliding T-Bevel Laying out an angle on a piece of wood
