What is Addition? Addition is one of the four basic mathematic operations. (The other three are subtraction, multiplication, and division.) Addition is the act of combining two or more numbers together to get one number.

An Example of Addition If I have 2 apples and add 3 more, how many apples will I have? Well, if we start out with two apples… …and we add three more… …we now have FIVE apples!

More Practice What if I start out with 3 apples and add 4? Well, if we start out with three apples… …and then we add four…..we get seven apples!

The Addition Symbol The addition symbol looks like this: + Now, let’s try adding using this symbol!

Adding with the Addition Symbol What if we have 2 apples and add 1 more? + If we have two apples… …plus (+) one more… …we get three apples!

More Practice What is 1 apple plus (+) 3 more apples? + When we add these apples together, we get four apples!

Adding with Numbers Sadly, we won’t always be able to add apples. In math, we have to add numbers too…

How to Add Numbers When adding numbers, we can still think of it like adding apples—even if the problem doesn’t say so. So, when we hear the question: “What’s 3 + 4?” we know exactly what to do.

Adding Numbers—Example What’s 3+4? We can still think of it like an apple question: What’s 3 apples plus 4 apples? Thinking of it like an “apple question” can help as you learn to add.

Adding Numbers—Example So, what is 3 apples plus 4 apples? We can see that three apples plus four apples is equal to… SEVEN APPLES! +

Adding Numbers—Example However, the question isn’t what is 3 apples + 4 apples? The question is what is 3 + 4? So, the answer isn’t 7 apples, it’s just 7, since we’re working with numbers only— no apples included!

More Practice What is 4+1? Think of it like an “apple question!” What’s 4 apples + 1 apple? + 4 apples+ 1 apple is 5 apples… so the answer is 5!

Even More Practice What is 2+2? Think of it like an “apple question!” ( + ) 4!

Even More Practice What is 1+2? (“add apples” in your head if you have to.) 3

The Equal Sign The equal sign sometimes comes at the end of addition problems. It looks like this: =

Using the Equal Sign This is the way we have been writing our math problems: What is 1+1? You can also write them like this: 1+1= They mean the same thing? 2! 2

Practice with = 4+2= (Think: What is 4 + 2?) 6

More Practice with = 5+1= 6

Even More Practice with = 2+5= 3+5= 2+1= 7 8 3

Another way to write it… Sometimes, math problems are written vertically, like this: =5 They mean the same thing, just written a different way!

Some More Practice Solve these math problems. 1+3= What is 3 plus 1? 4 7 4

Even More Practice Solve these as well. 1+6 What is 1 plus 6?

Adding 0 0 This (^) is a zero. It equals nothing. So, if you add 0 to any number, it will equal that same number.

An Example 5+0= Well, if we start out with five… …and we add zero, which is nothing…..we still get five! 5

Practice with Hint: they all equal their “starting number.”

More Practice with = What is 4 plus 0?

Adding more than 2 Numbers Adding more than two numbers is easy…you just add more numbers (and plus signs) to the problem.

An Example What is 2 apples plus 3 apples plus 4 apples? ++ Well, if we start out with 2 apples… …and add three… …and then add four more… …we get 9 apples!

Practice 2+2+2= ( + + ) 6

More Practice

Even More Practice = 4+1+2= =

Review of Everything What is the addition symbol? What is the equal symbol? + =

Review of Everything 1+1= = = =

Review of Everything What is 1 plus 3? What is 2 plus 2? What is 9 plus 0? What is 2 plus 3 plus 1 plus 0? What is 9 plus 1? What is 10 plus 2? What is 0 plus 0?

Congratulations! You are now “adding experts!” Don’t forget: if you get stuck “adding apples” in your head, you can add them on paper if you need to. Eventually, you won’t even need to add apples, you’ll be so good!
