LANDSCAPES AND LOCAL HERITAGE Along the Stevenson Trail (the end)

SAINT-JEAN-DU-GARD This place deserves a special attention in our slideshow. It is situated in another « département »: « the Gard », which takes its name from the river that flows there. The whole « département was a Roman province before and long after Jesus-Christ, therefore there are many Roman remains in this region. The climate is very mild in winter, but very hot in summer; hence a very different vegetation, compared with the one we can see in « Lozère ». We invite you to pay a visit to « The Bambouseraie», for sure, the garden of Eden on earth!

Saint-Jean-du-Gard -Stevenson arrived there on 3rd October He walked for 12 days, with his She-Donkey. -This town was influenced by Protestantism in the 16th Century and became an important place for the Camisards resistance in The Camisards is the name given to those riotists who refused to be converted to Catholicism. - Long before and after Jesus-Christ the Romans occupied this place and throughout the whole départment. - They left many remains among which The Pont du Gard, an impressive acqueduct that carried water from the spring to Nîmes, a large city then. It took 15 years to build. - Nowadays there are uphill car races in those narrow, winding roads of the Cévennes hills. the Roman Acqueduct The river Gardon Built about 50 A.D.

La Bambouseraie It is a bamboo forest, unique in the world. This botanic garden was created in the mid 19th century. The Japanese gardens and the exotic vegetation blossom in this Mediterranean climate. A steam train takes the visitors from Saint-Jean- du-Gard to La Bambouseraie.
