Bell Work!!! What are some HEALTHY foods that you love? Why?

What Should I Eat and How Much?

There are 6 key nutrients your body needs to stay healthy.

Turn to “Key Nutrients for Your Body”.

The food pyramid was created to help you get key nutrients from the food you eat every day.

Turn to “Food Pyramid for Teens” The amounts shown on this Food Pyramid are what’s recommended for teens. Younger, less active teens should eat the smaller amounts. Older, more active teens should eat more.

Grains 5-10 ounces. This group gives your body complex carbohydrates, vitamins and minerals.

Vegetables 2-4 cups. This group gives your body complex carbohydrates, vitamins, and minerals.

Fruits 1 ½-2 ½ cups. This group gives your body complex carbohydrates, vitamins and minerals.

Milk 3 cups. This group gives your body protein, vitamins and minerals.

Meat and Beans 5-7 ounces. This group gives your body protein, vitamins and minerals.

Oils 5-11 teaspoons. You need to eat a small amount of healthy fat each day. Nuts, fish and vegetable oils contain healthy fasts.

Write your 2 favorite foods from each group on the lines provided.

Share your answers with a partner… Partners should check to make sure that each food written down is part of the corresponding food group.

The food pyramid also reminds you to be active every day. You’ll learn more about physical activity later.

How many of you think it’s difficult to eat the recommended amount from each food group every day? Why?

Sometimes people eat more than they should and sometimes they eat less than they should because they don’t understand how much they should be eating.

Turn to “How Much Should I Eat?” We’ll go through this as a class.

After seeing the mounts you should eat from each food group, how many of you think it’s easy to eat the daily recommendations for each food group?

Turn to “Food Detective” Follow the directions and complete the sheet. We will correct in class.

It is important to know the food groups and how much you need to eat from each. Following the Food Guide Pyramid recommendations will help you eat healthy each day.
