2013 Curators of Marine and Lacustrine Geological Samples Meeting Kate Jarrett June GSC Collections Setting The Geological Survey of Canada (GSC) is part of the Earth Sciences Sector (ESS) of the Federal Department of Natural Resources of Canada (NRCan) In 2006 the Earth Materials Collections (EMC) was established and it assumed the authority for collections life cycle management When established the EMC was within the Data Management Division (DMD) of the Mapping Information Branch (MIB) June 2012 MIB was tasked with integrating with the Canada Centre of Remote Sensing (CCRS) in order to create a national geospatial and earth observation organization. The new Branch is yet to be named but we (EMC) are now within the Collections Management and GeoInformation Division

2013 Curators of Marine and Lacustrine Geological Samples Meeting Kate Jarrett June Earth Materials Collections The EMC assumed authority for collections life cycle management now and beyond the end of a particular project or program The goal of the project is to provide professional management of collections and the associated documentation and to protect them from degradation, theft and destruction while permitting physical and intellectual access to the collections now and for the future Staff working on the EMC collections belong to either MIB or the Geological Survey of Canada (GSC) In the 2011 June budget the Government of Canada (GOC) announced it would conducting a Government - wide review of expenditures 2012 budget cuts and MIB staff were affected and the GSC funding for programs was reduced and marine field programs were affected

2013 Curators of Marine and Lacustrine Geological Samples Meeting Kate Jarrett June Earth Materials Collections This project includes 6 facilities (16,000 m 2 total) across Canada (Dartmouth, Quebec City, Ottawa, Calgary, Vancouver, Sidney) There are many collections (50+) of many different materials rocks, fossils, core (rock, ice, unconsolidated sediment), water and unconsolidated material Each collection and facility are at different levels of sample and data management The EMC group are now developing a plan to transform the less well managed collections within the Department

2013 Curators of Marine and Lacustrine Geological Samples Meeting Kate Jarrett June Earth Materials Collections

2013 Curators of Marine and Lacustrine Geological Samples Meeting Kate Jarrett June National Marine Geoscience Collection The National Marine Geoscience Collection represents > 1.6 million sq.mi. area for offshore eastern Canada and the Canadian high Arctic, and coastal coverage stretching from the Canada/USA Gulf of Maine border to the marine areas of the Arctic Archipelago, Arctic Ocean and Beaufort Sea and also includes coastal coverage of western Canada 1225 expeditions back to 1950's 1156 dredge samples grab samples core samples (4484 subcores) 1816 drill/ borehole samples 250,000 processed sample residues and slides/thin sections 28,000 records (seismic, bathymetry, magnetics, gravity, sidescan and logs) 23,000 paper records, 479 CD, 801 DVD, 11,110 tapes (reel to reel, VHS and Exabyte) cruise reports, associated data including x-ray images, core photography, core descriptions and data

2013 Curators of Marine and Lacustrine Geological Samples Meeting Kate Jarrett June GSC Pacific (Sidney) Occupies a campus with the Institute of Ocean Sciences (Department of Fisheries and Oceans) Shares the facilities and services including the use of Canadian Coastguard research vessels and equipment Samples are dispersed throughout the campus In both refrigerated and ambient storage In 2011 we began creating a digital catalogue of what there is and where it is. Also had to cull material to make space for new material.

2013 Curators of Marine and Lacustrine Geological Samples Meeting Kate Jarrett June GSC Atlantic Co-located at BIO with the Department of Fisheries and Oceans, Canadian Hydrographic Service, Environment Canada and Department of National Defence Shares the facilities and services including the use of Canadian Coastguard research vessels and equipment Majority of the Marine Geoscience Collection is archived at the GSC Atlantic Core Storage Facility

2013 Curators of Marine and Lacustrine Geological Samples Meeting Kate Jarrett June GSC Atlantic Core Storage Facility Secure 10,000 sq ft heated warehouse One 20’ reefer container Two 20’ seagoing containers for storage of samples and for use at sea

2013 Curators of Marine and Lacustrine Geological Samples Meeting Kate Jarrett June GSC Atlantic Core Storage Facility Ambient storage – moveable racking units Core storage capacity (10,500 benthos D-tubes, 5,500 LCF D-tubes)

2013 Curators of Marine and Lacustrine Geological Samples Meeting Kate Jarrett June GSC Atlantic Core Storage Facility Refrigerated storage – moveable racking units 2100 sq ft of refrigerated space in 2 walk in units maintained at 4 degrees C Core storage capacity (3195 benthos D-tubes and LCF D- tubes)

2013 Curators of Marine and Lacustrine Geological Samples Meeting Kate Jarrett June GSC Atlantic Core Storage Facility 5000 boxes containing 250,000 residue samples 2400 boxes of seismic records, digital seismic records, bridge and seismic logs. In 2012 purchased a new Spacesaver Unit to help accommodate the 1240 boxes recently removed from Library and Archives Canada (LAC)
