BF PTA Mtg Math An Overview to Guide Parents about the Common Core, Math Expressions, and your student’s math experiences

Why Change? Why are we changing our math curriculum? There are shifts in expectations for learning and assessing mathematics. These changes are the result of several factors: *National Common Core State Standards (reflects the content and skills students need for college and careers) *Standards for Mathematical Practice (eight varieties of expertise educators should develop in their students) *Smarter Balanced Assessment (to be implemented during the 2014/2015 school year and involves computer-based adaptive assessments)

New Program what it is and isn’t… What are the new math programs? At the elementary level, we will be using new classroom resources published by Houghton Mifflin Harcourt called Math Expressions. This is a transition from Everyday Mathematics. Math Expressions is a National Science Foundation funded, research-based program that provides a balance of inquiry- based and direct skill-based instruction for students. We believe Math Expressions will challenge all levels of students and provide a wide range of supports for learners both inside and outside of the classroom.

Math Expressions is… Focused – Fewer standards in each grade level with higher expectations in terms of depth of knowledge. Students have time to master mathematical concepts. Coherent – Learning follows a carefully planned sequence that allows students to build their understanding while making connections between mathematical concepts. Rigorous – Math Expressions puts all children on the pathway to college and career readiness. Students develop: procedural fluency (“how to do it”), conceptual understanding (“why it works”) and strategic competence (“when to do it”).

K-5 Units of Study Let’s Explore what they are:

Math Expressions Kindergarten Units Understanding Numbers Groups in Numbers 6-10 Teen Numbers as Tens and Ones Partners, Problem Drawings, and Tens Consolidation of Concepts

Math Expressions First Grade Units Partners and Number Patterns Through 10 Addition and Subtraction Strategies Unknown Numbers in Addition and Subtraction Place Value Concepts Place Value Situations Comparisons and Data Geometry, Measurement, and Equal Shares Two-Digit Addition

Math Expressions Second Grade Units Addition and Subtraction Within 20 Addition Within 200 Length and Shapes Subtract 2-Digit Numbers Time, Graphs, and Word Problems 3-Digit Addition and Subtraction Arrays, Equal Shares, and Adding or Subtracting Lengths

Math Expressions Third Grade Units Multiplication and Division (0-5, 9, 10) Multiplication and Division 6-8, Multiplication with multiples of 10 Measurement, Time, and Graphs Multi-digit Addition and Subtraction Write Equations to Solve Word Problems Polygons, Perimeter, and Area Explore Fractions

Math Expressions Fourth Grade Units Place Value and Multi-digit Addition and Subtraction Multiplication with Whole Numbers Division with Whole Numbers Equations and Word Problems Measurement Fraction Concepts and Operations Fractions and Decimals Geometry

Math Expressions Fifth Grade Units Addition and Subtraction with Fractions Addition and Subtraction with Decimals Multiplication and Division with Fractions Multiplication with Whole Numbers and Decimals Division with Whole Numbers and Decimals Operations and Word Problems Algebra, Patterns, and Coordinate Graphs Measurement and Geometry

Program Strengths: Research based instructional strategies Fact fluency is a priority Provides support for students through hands-on activities, manipulatives, visual activities, and online opportunities for at home reinforcement Real life context problem solving and reasoning opportunities Focus on inquiry and fluency, which ensure student achievement of the Common Core State Standards
