Task 2: Land Uses In your groups, and using your O.S map to help, try to come up with 2 activities that you think might be practiced on the 2 features you have seen. Great Langdale: Lake Windermere:

Great Langdale Farming: Dominated by sheep farming because most of the land is unsuitable for other types of farming, because: Steep slopes make the use of machinery difficult. Low temperatures, means there is only a short growing season and cloudy conditions do not encourage plant growth. Remoteness from large cities make it difficult to grow perishable produce. Great Langdale will also be used for cattle grazing

Forestry: 11% of the Lake District National Park is forested, and this is increasing. There is a high percentage of forestry because; it reduces soil erosion on steep slopes.

Lake Windermere: As well as the other lakes in the Lake District, Lake Windermere is important for providing fresh water to the people large settlements such as Manchester. By using the natural lakes of Windermere and Thirlmere as reservoirs, it is cheaper than constructing a reservoir.

As well as Lake Windermere providing a fresh water supply, it is also used for activities such as sailing, water sports and boat rides for tourists and visitors to the Lake District. Windermere boat services and cruises
