Education for Sustainable Development and Global Citizenship ESDGC

What is ESDGC? Climate change, poverty, conflict and consumer pressure are all part of our world today. Education for sustainable development and global citizenship (ESDGC) seeks to find ways to raise awareness. It also addresses the consequences of our lifestyle choices and prepares us for sustainable living in the 21st century as global citizens.

The Nine Key Concepts of ESDGC

Documents relating to ESDGC…

Where are we in relation to ESDGC ? Strong partnerships and projects relating to ESDGC e.g. Eco-schools, Fair Trade, Comenius Project. ESDGC noted on fortnightly planning pro-formas. ESDGC mapped across the Curriculum at Key Stage 1 and Key Stage 2.

Where are pupils in relation to ESDGC ? Are they aware of the school ethos relating to ESDGC? Are they aware of aspects of ESDGC within their lessons? Are they involved with organisations and initiatives that the school supports? Are they able to influence decisions and involved in developments?

Effective Delivery of ESDGC Through Commitment and Leadership Embed in Teaching and Learning Via Partnerships and the Community Within Monitoring and Evaluation

ESDGC Action Plan To continue to plan for and note learning relating to ESDGC on fortnightly planning pro-formas (*please indicate the concept the activity relates to e.g. diversity, interdependence etc.) To continue ESDGC work through Eco-schools, Fair Trade, Comenius and Realising Resources project work. To utilise the wealth of ESDGC resources available on the Internet e.g. Oxfam, Global Gang, SE Wales ESDGC Forum …

Putting the ESDGC ‘Jigsaw’ together What does the ‘ESDGC’ picture look like at our school? Who is available to help support and deliver? What is our role personally and professionally?

Children and young adults deserve to know that their fate is inextricable linked to, and affected by, the lives and decisions of others across the world. They have a right to understand the crucial issues facing the planet and know how they can personally play a part in helping shape the future.
