Blog Development Knowledge Management Strategy for the Nursing Shortage and the Aging Nursing Workforce Why is this topic important? Relevance in the healthcare industry Reasons for my interest in this topic

Blog Development Why is this topic important? United States Department of Health and Human Services conducted a survey on the supply and demand of registered nurses. The results were presented in a report titled: Projected Supply, Demand, and Shortages of Registered Nurses: This report examined the past, present, and future trends in the registered nurse workforce across the United States.

Blog Development Why is this topic important? There are over 1.89 million registered nurse full time equivalents (FTE) working in the United States. Currently, the demand for registered nurses is estimated to be 2 million FTE. The current nursing shortage is a modest shortage of 6%.

Blog Development This nursing shortage currently at 6% nationally is expected to rise to 29% by the year 2020.

Blog Development Relevance in Healthcare Industry September 2005 The Joint Commission produced a white paper titled: “Health Care at the Crossroads” This call to action is for those who influence, develop or carry out policies that will lead the way to resolution of the issue. The report states that the nursing shortage is the most extreme of the healthcare personnel shortages.

Blog Development Reasons for My Interest in this Topic I choose the issue of the nursing shortage and the aging nursing workforce for my blog because as a nursing professional and nursing leader, the nursing shortage and the aging nursing workforce will impact my practice of nursing and these issues are at the core of the survival of the profession of nursing.

Blog Development Historically, nursing shortages have been short lived and cyclical, the current shortage is different and is expected to last well into the next decade and beyond. This shortage is: Driven by the supply side of the supply/demand equation. This is a more complex shortage, which promises to worsen during the next decade as more nurses retire. Past economic solutions such as sign-on bonuses, relocation coverage, or new premium packages will have limited and temporary effects because they simply redistribute the supply of nurses, not increase it.

Blog Development The focus of my blog is to research and communicate the emerging nursing shortage and the aging nursing workforce. Further study will help me to: Develop strategies for keeping the aging nurse at the bedside. Develop a “Call to Action” and risk management strategies aimed at reducing the impact of the nursing shortage and the aging nursing workforce on the delivery of high quality, safe, patient care.

Blog Development The goals for my blog : That I will be able to demonstrate topic familiarity. That I will be able to provide a theoretical framework for my blog. That I will expand my knowledge of the subject and provide a balanced perspective.

Blog Development weblog (web-log,) sort of an on- line diary (May 2007, blog search engine Technorati was tracking more than 71 million blogs) Technorati

Blog Development A blog is a website where entries are written in chronological order and displayed in reverse chronological order. "Blog" can also be used as a verb, meaning to maintain or add content to a blog. chronological order
