We live in a globally connected society 21 st century learning is all about preparing young people to become caring, competent Canadians with the knowledge, skills, and attributes to be successful global citizens Our vision is to create Excellent Learning Environments that ensure we meet our mandate to prepare our students for adult life.
Excellent Learning Environments Outcomes are clear to the student Where are students relative to the outcome…a pre- assessment phase? Final evaluation based on authentic compilation of assessment devices Revisit outcomes to think about Instructional design. (Learning styles, complexity of outcome, hidden skills, etc.) What evidence will show that students have met the outcomes? A plan to assist students when the outcome is not being met… a new course of action What does good learning look like? (Rubrics and exemplars) Selection of input structure for new knowledge Giving students an opportunity to interact with new knowledge Giving students an opportunity to experiment or use new knowledge Constant assessment feedback so students can modify learning efforts Classroom structure, peer relationships, culture of school and student strategies for their more independent or collaborative learning.
Citizen: a member of a society Citizenship: The character of an individual in a society Digital Citizenship: The character of an individual in a digitally-mediated society
But… 21 st Century Students lack an adult perspective on safety, responsibility and general citizenship They Need to be Good Digital Citizens
Challenges Yet these are essential tools and learning environments in the 21 st Century To help guide students wisely, we need to develop a deeper understanding of the digitally connected world and what it means to be good digital citizens Yet many of our schools may not yet be ready
