12/18/13 Owen Richardson  Real Name-George Herman Ruth  Grew up very poor in Baltimore Maryland. Oldest of 8 children  Was sent away to a boarding school at 7 called St Mary’s Catholic School where he stayed until he was signed by the Baltimore Orioles at age 19  Nicknames-Babe, The Bambino and the Sultan of Swat  He was very generous and donated time and money to many organizations that focused on children  He was always overweight due to his lifestyle (eating and parties)  Babe was a very successful pitcher with the Red Sox before he became the home run king with the Yankees  Still considered the best baseball player ever by many even though he has been retired for ¾ a Century  The Boston Red Sox sold Babe to the New York Yankees in 1920 and is still considered one of the worst baseball decisions ever. This mistake by the Red Sox resulted in “ The Curse of the Bambino”.

The Boston Red Sox/NY Yankees rivalry is legendary The rivalry started when the owner of the Boston Red Sox sold its star player, Babe Ruth, to the New York Yankees in 1920 for 100,000. Prior to 1920, the Red Sox had won 5 World Series Titles and the New York Yankees had never even played in a World Series The Boston Red Sox would go 86 years without a World Series appearance after trading Babe. The Yankees would win 26 World Series in that time and are widely considered the best sports franchise of all time.
