Birmingham Children, Young People and Families Directorate Family Support and Safeguarding

Family Support and Safeguarding Lord Laming 2003 ‘it is not possible to separate the protection of children from wider support to families. Indeed, often the best protection for a child is achieved by the timely intervention of family support services’. further highlighted by Professor Munro, 2011. ‘the provision of early help is vital to keeping children safe’. Family Support and Safeguarding

Co Location of teams From April 2013 Family support Teams and Social Work Teams have relocated into area hubs. Co locating Family support workers and Social Workers together has created a greater cohesion between teams alongside extending links to local services and identifying support for families that qualify under the “Troubled Family “ agenda.

Team locations – Hub Children’s Centres East Fox Hollies Kitts Green Dyson Gardens Golden Hillock Park Road South Albert Bradbeer (Merrishaw) Reameadow Chinnbrook Doddington West & Central The Willows Birchfield St Thomas North Circle Featherstone

Social Work intervention Requests for Social work intervention from the area safeguarding teams should be directed through the single access no 0121 303 1888 The project in Shard End sought to intervene earlier with FCN’s and to see Adult Services & Children Services working together As the programme was rolled out The comments from professionals on the ground was that ‘family CAF makes perfect sense’ as many of CYP’s challenges were generated by Adult indicators e.g Adult Mental Health, Worklessness, Housing, Finance, Parenting, Conflict within families and the community, Adult disabilities, Alcohol/drug dependency. The existing CAF process addresses many of these issues but the focus was always on CYP outcomes and not the positive response for adults outcomes

Accessing the Family Support teams 1. Call CIASS ( Children's information advice and support service ) new single point of access no 0121 303 1888
