The For and Against Essay

Steps Choose a controversial topic that interests you. Do some reading on the topic, followed by the process of brainstorming

Steps Write a clear and strong enough thesis statement. Choose ideas to support your arguments prior to the process of writing itself. Consider the opposing arguments (e.g. If you were arguing with your friends, how would they try to prove you were wrong?)

Steps Organize your ideas into an outline. Paragraph 1 – Introduction includes a background to the topic itself and thesis statement Paragraph 2 – One argument(-s) and your refutation Paragraph 3 – Another argument(-s) and your refutation Paragraph 4 – Conclusion includes restatement of thesis and supporting ideas. Make a prediction, a recommendation, or a summary.

Final Step Be sure to edit your writing for grammar, spelling, and word choice errors. Good Luck!
