Counter Argument What’s that again???

What is a counter-argument? Used in persuasive essays, a counter argument is used to show a contrasting point of view to your own.

Where does a counter-argument come in my essay? A counter argument should be your LAST body paragraph.

How do I write a counter-argument? To begin a counter-argument, start with a transition that signals you are going to talk about a contrasting argument. However, in contrast to, on the other hand, adversely, to the contrary, etc.

How do I write a counter-argument? 2. State your counter argument. Thesis/Topic: There are many advantages to having a 7th period study hall each day. Counter Argument: Contrary to the advantages already mentioned, some might argue that having a 7th period study hall is a waste of time. 3. Explain the counter-argument. Contrary to the advantages already mentioned, some might argue that having a 7th period study hall is a waste of time. Instead of using their time wisely to study or complete homework, students will simply go to sleep or sit in their desk and do nothing.

How do I write a counter-argument? 4. State your reason for why the counter-argument is wrong. Contrary to the advantages already mentioned, some might argue that having a 7th period study hall is a waste of time. Instead of using their time wisely to study or complete homework, students will simply go to sleep or sit in their desk and do nothing. While that might occur every now and then, given the opportunity to complete assignments at school as opposed to home, students will do the work at school every time.

How do I write a counter-argument? 5. Give an example proving why your argument proves the counter-argument is wrong. According to a survey of 100 Georgia middle school teachers that have a 7th period study hall, there was an 85% increase in homework completion during the 2010-2011 school year. In addition, teachers surveyed reported seeing an increase of 50% in test scores across the board that they attribute to additional study time occurring in the 7th period study hall.

How do I write a counter-argument? 6. Explain how your example supports your argument against your counter-argument. According to a survey of 100 Georgia middle school teachers that have a 7th period study hall, there was a 85% increase in homework completion during the 2010-2011 school year. In addition, teachers surveyed reported seeing an increase of 50% in test scores across the board that they attribute to additional study time occurring in the 7th period study hall. Clearly, if so many students are increasing their grades by completing their homework on time and studying for their tests resulting in higher scores, a 7th period study hall is not a waste of time.

Structure Transition and introduce counter Explain the counterargument State your reason for why the counter-argument is wrong Give an example of your side of the argument. Explain how your example supports your argument against your counter-argument

For = Wear school uniforms Counter = Don’t wear uniforms Although there are benefits to wearing a uniform, there are advantages to not wearing one. Not wearing a uniform will allow students to express themselves. Although this could be positive, some students may be judged too harshly based on their clothing. For example, a student could be mistaken for a gang member based on the colors they are wearing. Being dressed similarly to other students would eliminate this occurrence and help students focus on academics.
