 A preposition is a term or phrase used to show how one object relates to another object in space.  Did you know the word "preposition" comes from Greek and Latin roots meaning "to place before.“?

 Most of the time prepositions are used the same way in Spanish as they are used in English. But it may be confusing since one preposition in Spanish can have many different translations in English. Por ejemplo A This is a very common preposition that can mean to, at, by, or for depending on how it is used.

 Single word used to show a single preposition  A : to, at  Ante : before, in the presence of  Bajo : under  Con: with  De: of, from  Desde: from, since  Por: for, by, through  En: in, on, at  Entré: between, among  Para: for, in order to  Según: according to  Sin: without

Vamos a practicar deportes  We are going to practice sports Ella es de Africa  She is from Africa Está en mi clase  It is in my class

 Term or phrase used to show a single preposition  Encima de: On top of  A lado de: Beside of  A la izquierda de: To the left of  A la derecha de: To the right of  A bajo de: To the bottom of  Enfrente de: Front of  Atrás de: Behind of

Ella está a lado de Jose  She is beside Jose La leche está a la derecha de los huevos  The milk is to the right of the eggs Mi carro está lejos de aquí  My car is far from here

 When doing Prepositions contractions or combination of two words may be necessary. a + el = al Vamos [a el] cafe -> Vamos al cafe. de + el = del Este pescado es [de el] lago. -> Este pescado es del lago.

EspanolIngles  Spanish: Yo (subject) voy (verb) a (preposition) la tienda (prepositional object).  English: I (subject) am going (verb) to (preposition) the store (prepositional object).
