INTRODUCTION Objective: To find the surface area of a pyramid and cone. To find the volume of a prism and the cylinder. Essential Question: How do you find the surface area of a pyramid? What is needed to calculate the lateral and surface areas of a cone? Why do we measure the volume of a prism or a cylinder?

A pyramid is a polyhedron in which one face can be an polygon and the other faces are triangles that meet at a common vertex. A regular pyramid is a pyramid whose base is a regular polygon and whose lateral faces are congruent isosceles triangles.

Volume is the space that a figure occupies. The volume V of a cube is the cube of the length of its edge e, or V = e 3. Cavalier’s Principle: If two space figures have the same height and the same cross-sectional area at every level, then they have the same volume.

I Do What is Ms AJ thinking? 1.What is the surface area of the hexagonal pyramid? 1.The Pyramid of Cestius is located in Rome, Italy. Using the dimensions in the figure below, what is the lateral area of the Pyramid of Cestius? Round to the nearest square meter.

I Do What is Ms AJ thinking? 3. What is the surface area of the cone in terms of pi? 4. In a chemistry lab experiment, you use the conical filter funnel shown at the right. How much filter paper do you need to line the funnel?

I Do What is Ms AJ thinking? 5. What is the volume of the rectangular prism at the right? 6. What is the approximate volume of the triangular prism?

I Do What is Ms AJ thinking? 7. What is the volume of the cylinder in terms of pi? 8. What is the volume of the rectangular prism at the right?

Exit Ticket/Conclusion Do you remember? Why do we measure the volume of a prism or a cylinder? Answer: In real-life, there are times when we need to know the amount of space inside a prism or a cylinder. The formulas for the volume of a prism or cylinder help us to measure this.
