SURFACE AREA Vocabulary Surface Area – The sum of the areas of all the faces of a three-dimensional object. Lateral Surface Area – Total surface area minus the bases. PrismNumber of lateral faces Number of bases Rectangular Prism Cube Triangular prism

How do you decide which dimension is the length, width and height of a rectangular prism? First determine which side is the base. The longer edge of the base is commonly called the length, the shorter edge is commonly called the width, and the other edge is called the height. Surface Area Formula for Rectangular Prism:

Example #1: Erica is making a jewelry box of wood in the shape of a rectangular prism. The jewelry box will have the dimensions shown. She plans to spray paint the exterior of the box. How many square inches will she have to paint?

Example #2: Jenny’s tent is in the shape of a triangular prism. What is the surface area of the tent? Bases For 2 Bases = Sides For 2 sides = Bottom TOTAL SURFACE AREA

CLASSWORK: 4 Questions (On next slide) UNIT TEST NEXT THURSDAY APRIL 16

#1 #4#3 #2 Classwork (To be included with tomorrow’s homework on separate paper. Divide into 4 boxes on front and 4 boxes on back, #1-8. Answers in red. Show work to support answer. Self-check.) Find the Surface Area of each figure. Draw figure and show ALL work.
