EQ: How do the functions of the human body systems interact? Today I will learn about the integumentary and lymphatic systems because both systems are responsible for protecting the human body from disease.

Fact or Fiction? (7 minutes) 1. It takes from about 4 to 8 seconds for food to pass from the top of the throat to the stomach. 2. It takes less than 2 seconds for liquids to pass from the top of the throat to the stomach. 3. The small intestine is the smallest portion of the digestive tract.

Fact or Fiction? 4. Unlike the small intestine, the large intestine does not secrete digestive enzymes. 5. In short people, the stomach is high found in the abdomen and runs horizontally. In tall people, the stomach tends to run vertically, forming a J shape.

Fact or Fiction? All were Facts! Except #3. The small intestine is actually the longest portion of the digestive tract.

Digestive System The digestive system is a group of organs that break down, or digest, food so your body can get nutrients. The main organs of the digestive system make one long tube through the body. This tube is called the digestive tract. The digestive tract includes the mouth, pharynx, esophagus, stomach, small intestine, and large intestine.

Other Major Organs The digestive system has several organs that are not part of the digestive tract. The liver, gallbladder, pancreas, and salivary glands add materials to the digestive tract to help break down food. However, food does not go into these organs.

Types of Digestions Mechanical Digestion: Grinding, Cutting and Churning. Example: Mouth: This is when your teeth grinds the food. Stomach: This is when your stomach churns the food.

Types of Digestion Chemical Digestion: Anything that has something to do with saliva, enzymes, and chemicals. Example: Mouth: This is when saliva breaks down the food. Stomach: This is the moment when gastric juices break down the food, food is now called chyme. Chyme in the stomach

Digestive System It takes about 24 hours for food to make the trip from your mouth to the end of the large intestine. You can help keep your digestive system healthy by eating whole grains, fruits, and vegetables.

Complications Acid Reflux-acids from the stomach flow back into the esophagus causing discomfort and pain. Gallstones-hard pebble-like deposits that form in the gallbladder. Diarrhea-loose, watery, frequent stools. Constipation-having a bowel movement less than 3 times a week.

Closing: Last Word Brainstorm all the things you can remember about the digestive system. Then use the information to create phrases for each letter of an acronym that you have chosen. For example, M O U T H
