Welcoming Remarks APEC-Khon Kaen International Symposium on Lesson Study 2007 August Dr. Alan Ginsburg, Lead Shepherd, Human Resource Development Working Group (HRDWG) Director of Policy and Program Studies Service

Importance of Lesson Study Project for APEC Mission to Strengthen Human Resource Development Strengthening the teaching of mathematics for all students supports 21 st Century skills. Lesson study approach is applicable throughout the APEC region. Project is producing valuable products –Understanding mathematical thinking –How to do lesson study –Examples of effective mathematics lessons with videos 2

3 Changing Nature of Tasks U.S. Workers Perform: Need for 21 st Century Skills Source: Levy and Murnane (2004). The new division of labor. Russell Sage Foundation

Lesson Study Within an APEC Human Resource Framework APEC’s 21 members account –41% of the world's population –49% of world trade. APEC carries out much of its work through its working groups, including the Human Resources Development Working group (HRDWG). Proposing Lesson Study as a leader in new HRDWG reforms to strengthen dissemination and collaboration for Human Resource Development. 4

HRDWG Mission: Sharing Knowledge, Experience and Skills to Strengthen Human Resources in the APEC Region Human Resource Development Working Group CBN (capacity building network) EDNET (education network) Lesson Study Project LSPN (labor and social protection network) 5

1. 21 st Century Knowledge and Skills for All How Lesson Study Aligns with the Three HRDWG Objectives: 2. Integrate HRD into the Global Economy 3. Address the Social Dimension Of Globalization Mathematics Lesson Study Cooperate to share knowledge of effective teaching strategies Teaching Underserved Students 6

Proposing Lesson Study as a Leader in Support of HRDWG Strategic Operational Priorities Fund projects that build findings cumulatively to support HRDWG objectives. –Lesson Study is exemplary! Publicize projects to expand awareness and use of HRDWG activities and products. –Lesson study could be a leader. Use Wiki technology for project collaboration. –Proposing lesson study as an APEC-Wiki pilot 7

Lesson Study: A Proposed Knowledge Bank (KB) Wiki Pilot Adriana de Kanter, U.S. Dept of Education Brian Fu, U.S. Dept. of Education Dr. Alan Ginsburg, Lead Shepherd and U.S. Dept of Education 9

Key Proposed Elements: 1.Expand website usage to a larger audience through a user-friendly web site that is a searchable library of lesson study products. 2.Use Wiki technology to allow registered users to add content and edit the content of others (with permission). 3.Publicize lesson study project and KB Wiki pilot. 9

-- Primary Website users are Lesson Study project participants -- Too few math educators in APEC region are aware of rich Lesson Study resources 1. Reach a Wider Audience with the Lesson Study Web Site 10

User-Friendly Lesson Study Web Site Website Users: Educators in APEC region interested in understanding, adopting, or contributing to lesson study. Site organization: Content organized for easy access. Site items: highlights available and text heavy sections broken up into manageable pieces. 11

The Lesson Study Project Website Can Reach a Wider Audience Through: Providing an overview on what Lesson Study is Providing summaries on why these papers are significant Providing context to how to use these videos Break these videos into smaller files Providing text in English and other languages where feasible Providing all content in one place with a searchable topic structure 12

Example of a Website Targeting a Broad Audience: Search Descriptions accompany links Descriptions accompany videos 13

2. Using Wikis To Allow Communities to Collaborate to Create Dynamic, Self- updating Online Resources Dynamic Self-Updating Knowledge Bank Wiki Dynamic Self-Updating Knowledge Bank Wiki Dynamic Self-Updating Knowledge Bank Wiki Dynamic Self-Updating Knowledge Bank Wiki Dynamic Self-Updating Knowledge Bank Wiki Dynamic Self-Updating Knowledge Bank Wiki Read Write Read Write Read Write Read Write Read Write Community of Practice 14

Example of an Effective Wiki: Wikipedia.org 15 Features millions of articles in hundreds of languages including: Vietnamese, Malay, Indonesian, Japanese, etc 15

For HRDWG Projects Wikis can: Facilitate collaboration in a growing network of contributors to add or review lessons and lesson study applications Reach a wider audience by offering new online resources Elevate usage of existing project resources 16

The Relationship Between Dynamic Wiki Pages and Static Project Resources (Knowledge Bank) Embedded wiki hyperlinks take users to static project resources and provide a context for why these resources are important and how they fit into a larger story Editable Wiki PagesStatic Project Resources Project Papers Provide topic synthesis and summaries by telling a story Project Presentations Research Papers Project Links Text text text Link text. Link text text. Text text. Link text. Text Link text text text. Link text text. Text text text. Link text. 17

Example: How Wikis Relate to Project Resources Embedded wiki hyperlink takes users from a summary of Lesson Study to a conference paper Wiki page that you can edit Project resources hosted on the conference site or the APEC Knowledge Bank 18

Edit page link Wikis Are Easy To Use 19

Insert Images Insert Videos Edit Text Editing Is Simple 20

Key Design Questions for Wiki Who is the target audience of this wiki? –How can a wiki benefit the audience by adding value to the existing conference, project, or resource? Who are the contributors? –What are plausible incentive systems for contributions? –Will there be a selection process for adding contributors to avoid quality and abuse issues? –Will there be an initial community of at least 15 contributors? What are the major categories of information? How and when will contributors begin their editing responsibilities. 22

Contributors can raise awareness of Lesson Study and increase web traffic to wiki and Lesson Study site by: Posting links on relevant discussion groups, forums, and blogs Referencing your wiki entries in s to colleagues Nominating other experts to contribute Announcing the web based products in other relevant conferences 3. Publicizing the Lesson Study Project 23

Publicizing Lesson Study: EDNET 2008 Education Ministerial Meeting Peru hosts June 2008 meeting of APEC Ministers of Education around 21 st Century Competencies for All. –Ministers set future EDNET project priorities for funding Xi’an China hosts Jan Pre-Ministerial Symposium co-sponsored with Peru and U.S. –Math/Science is one of four priority areas. –Lesson study could be presented as a math/science case study. 24

Implications: Think Differently: Make Lesson Study HRDWG Leader for Dissemination and Collaboration Expanded Lesson Study Project More Informal Taking Risks New Energy Use IT (Wiki) Lead Shepherd Vision 25

Together We Can Accomplish What None of Us Can Accomplish Alone: Collaboration More Collaboration More Collaboration Even More Collaboration

Discussion Questions to Discuss During the Conference 1.Whether and how to revise the Lesson Study project web site to make it friendly and more useable to the large numbers of potential APEC customers? 2.Whether and how to make Lesson Study a highly visible Lead Shepherd Wiki pilot? 3.How to better publicize among APEC members the several years of activities and products of the Lesson Study project? 4.How to showcase Lesson Study findings at the Education Ministerial events? 27
