Knowing how to set and achieve goals are important life skills. Lets explore how to set and achieve goals …

What is Goal Setting? The process of working toward something you want to accomplish

TWO THINGS TO CONSIDER: (1) Is your goal a short term goal or a long term goal ? (2) Make sure your goal is realistic and reachable.

REMEMBER: Long Term goals require a lot more time and patience than Short Term goals

ALSO: If your goals are unrealistic and unreachable, you will end up getting frustrated and discouraged

EIGHT STEPS TO FOLLOW: STEP 1: Write your goal down. * Put your written goal someplace where you will see it often.

STEP 2: Make a plan. * List steps you need to follow to meet your goal. * Breaking your big goal into small steps can make it easier to meet your goal.

S T E P 3 : S e t a t i m e l i n e. * W h e n w i l l I m e e t e a c h s t e p ? * W h e n w i l l I r e a c h m y f i n a l g o a l ?

STEP 4: Get help. * Identify people and things you need to help you meet your goal.

S T E P 5 : S t a r t n o w ! ! * D o n o t p r o c r a s t i n a t e !

STEP 6: Keep a written record of your progress. * Write steps down as you accomplish them. * This keeps you accountable and helps build confidence.

STEP 7: Evaluate your progress. * Are you making progress? * Do you need to change anything?

STEP 8: Reward Yourself for met goals. * Buy or do something you enjoy as a reward.

If you follow these eight steps… … you might have better success in achieving your goals!

If you want to achieve your goals …

You need to start setting S.M.A.R.T. Goals

S. M. A. R. T. goals are: S = Specific M = Measurable A = Achievable R = Realistic T = Timely

Let’s look at each part of “S.M.A.R.T.” goal setting:

S = Specific Goal is detailed, particular, or focused You know exactly what you want to accomplish Easy to understand

M = Measurable Goal you can see, observe, count, quantify There is evidence you met goal Consider the words (language) you use

A = Achievable Goal is self-maintained Mostly up to you to meet You have control over meeting goal

R = Realistic Goal is practical and possible Balance between what is hard and what is easy Requires a “stretch” that makes you progress and improve

T = Timely Goal is scheduled Has a deadline Must be finished by a certain date or time

Let’s take the 10 question SMART Goal Test
