Today’s LEQ: What factors influenced Non-European immigration and settlement?

 Farmers needed cheap labor  (TX, NM, AZ, CA)  High wages attracted Mexican workers  Treated as inferior, low wages, & segregated schools

 Many were Catholics from Quebec  Settled in New England & Great Lakes  Took jobs in textile mills & logging camps

 Europeans coming to the United States made up over 70% of all 19 th century immigrants, with the remainder arriving from Asia, Mexico and Canada  They came in two distinct waves, from 1845 to 1860 and 1880 to  Think: Why do you think there was a break in immigration between 1860 and 1880?  Most came seeking economic opportunities or to join family already living in America, but many Eastern Europeans fled their homes to escape political and religious persecution  Until 1855, immigrants were not processed!
