02.02 SUPPLEMENTAL 6511 Keyboarding 6 Repetitive Stress Injuries (RSI) Repetitive Stress Injuries (RSI) is a name used for a group of conditions that occur when someone performs a task repeatedly causing too much stress being placed on the joints Examples of these injuries are Carpal Tunnel Syndrome (CTS) and DeQuervain’s Disease

02.02 SUPPLEMENTAL 6511 Keyboarding 7 Carpal Tunnel Syndrome (CTS) Is the entrapment of the median nerve in the carpal tunnel. CTS occurs due to the swelling of the median nerve or the tendons of the wrist. Occurs from using the computer for hours without proper body posture and improper techniques. Causes pain, tingling, numbness in the thumb, index, and middle fingers, and weakness and swelling of the wrist and hand.

02.02 SUPPLEMENTAL 6511 Keyboarding 8 DeQuervain’s Disease DeQuervain’s Disease is an overuse injury of the thumb extensor tendons. It often occurs from repetitive tapping of the space bar.

02.02 SUPPLEMENTAL 6511 Keyboarding 9 Exercises for Carpal Tunnel Syndrome Extend and stretch both wrists and fingers acutely as if they are in a hand-stand position. Hold for a count of 5. Straighten both wrists and relax fingers. Make a tight fist with both hands.

02.02 SUPPLEMENTAL 6511 Keyboarding 10 Exercises (Continued) Then bend both wrists down while keeping the fist. Hold for a count of 5. Straighten both wrists and relax fingers, for a count of 5. The exercise should be repeated 10 times. Then let your arms hang loosely at the side and shake them for a few seconds.
