Overview of the first course IHL A 13-week course 10 participants TP in 2 blocks of 4 weeks ‘Simulation’: OCT was in different centre to TP tutors: - Communication with TPTs was via email/phone/Skype - OCT read TP feedback and plans after each TP and built a profile of trainees - OCT did all of the ‘stage’ reports in consultation with TPTs - OCT did all the marking, with the TPTs doing shadow marking -Introduce myself and my CELTA experience. -Also my involvement with CELTA Online. My reservations 23

Pre-course: Concerns A sense of ‘isolation’ for OCT and trainees The lack of ‘flexibility’ in the course Building rapport and a working relationship with trainees Effective communication with TPTs Absence of ‘experiential learning’

Pre-course: Concerns A sense of ‘isolation’ for OCT and trainees The lack of ‘flexibility’ in the course Building rapport and a working relationship with trainees Effective communication with TPTs Absence of ‘experiential learning’ OCT worked 2 hours/day on course; F2F tutorials could help trainees The online CELTA has flexibility of revisiting key units Rapport building done via ‘live rooms’, discussion forums and emails Greater objectivity and efficiency in communication Replaced with wide range of video clips of ‘real teaching’; no apparent impact on TP
