A Tale of Two Cities Cardiff Cardiff is the capital city of Wales. It became the capital in 1955, making it one of the newest capital cities. It is the UK’s 10th largest city, with a population of about 346,000 is one of the smallest European capitals. The city’s major tourist attractions include Cardiff Castle, the National Gallery of Wales, the Millennium Centre and the renovated and historic docks area. Cardiff is well known for its sport, especially rugby. Cardiff’s Millennium Stadium has one of the largest sliding roofs in the world. It can seat 74,000. About 18 million tourists visit the city each year, for the shopping, sights, museums and culture. Many famous people have come from Cardiff, including the singer Shirley Bassey, the comedian Griff Rhys-Jones and the writer Roald Dahl. One of the most infamous pirates, Henry Morgan, was born there. Someone who lives in Cardiff and its suburbs is colloquially known as a ‘Taffy’ named after the River Taff! Sydney Sydney was the site of the first British colony in Australia, which was set up in 1788, Many foreigners think that Sydney is Australia's capital but that is Canberra. Sydney and its surrounds contain around 20% of the entire population of Australia at about 4.6 million people The general area classified under "Sydney" is actually broken up into 38 separate governmental districts over an area of around 1687 square kilometres Sydney was originally going to be named "Albion", but its founder, Arthur Phillip, changed the name in recognition of Thomas Townshend Lord Sydney's efforts in authorising the colony's establishment Sydney receives over 10 million international and domestic visitors each year for its beaches and attractions. The Sydney Opera House is very famous it was completed in 1973, taking 14 years and 10 thousand construction workers to build, with a final total cost of $102 million - more than 14 times the originally intended price The Sydney Harbour Bridge is another famous landmark it was finished in 1932 and took 272,000 litres of paint to cover - just for the first coat. Someone who lives in Sydney and its suburbs is colloquially known as a ‘Sydneysider’
