Cell Division Growth and Development: A Property of Life

Maryland Science Content Standard Based on research and examples from video technology explain that the repeated division of cells enables organisms to grow and make repairs.

Objective Students will demonstrate the cell cycle in order to comprehend that daughter cells contain replicated DNA from the parent cell. This allows for all cells in the body to contain the same genetic makeup.

Notebook Title:Cell Cycle Manipulatives Date: 9/17/2015

Inquiry Learning Bag of materials should contain: –4 tan tubes –2 white tubes –Orange beads –Blue beads –String –Chalk

Now What? Using the materials in the bag –Simulate the first stage of the cell cycle Diagram with chalk on your table top Write main events of the stage on your table Get checked by teacher Diagram the corrected model into your notebook –Continue with all stages/phases. Anaphase should be accompanied with a “working” model

Closing Question After completing the process: –The DNA in the second cell is identical to the parent cell….explain why. –What is the purpose (property of life) that is fulfilled by cells dividing?
