WASTE FREE LUNCHES BY: TATIANA AND NADIA EGBUNINE

SAVE THE EARTH! WE ARE SAVING THE EARTH TO HELP PREVENT POLLUTION. IT HAS BEEN ESTIMATED THAT ON AVERAGE A SCHOOL-AGE CHILD USING A DISPOSABLE LUNCH MAKES 67 POUNDS OF WASTE PER SCHOOL YEAR. THAT COMPARES TO 18,760 POUNDS OF LUNCH WASTE FOR JUST ONE AVERAGE-SIZE ELEMENTARY SCHOOL. WE SHOULD ALWAYS REUSE, REDUCE AND RECYCLE

WHAT CAN YOU DO TO HELP? YOU CAN USE PLASTIC CONTAINERS FROM HOME AND REUSE THEM. YOU CAN BRING IN COMPOSTABLE LUNCHES OR BAGS. YOU CAN ALSO BUY LUNCH FROM THE CAFETERIA(WHICH ALSO HAS COMPOSTABLE THINGS.)

WHAT HAS BALTIMORE CITY DONE SO FAR? IN 2011, THE CITY COLLECTED 26,000 TONS OF RECYCLABLE MATERIALS. THAT’S 52,000,000 POUNDS OF MATERIAL DIVERTED FROM YOUR LANDFILLS. ON THE OTHER HAND, LAST YEAR THEY COLLECTED 147,000 TONS OF TRASH – THAT’S A LOT OF GARBAGE – AND WE CAN REDUCE THAT AMOUNT DRAMATICALLY. IN 2010, BALTIMORE CITY RECYCLED 27% OF ITS WASTE.

WHY IS RECYCLING SO IMPORTANT AND HOW CAN YOU PREVENT IT? RECYCLING HELPS SUSTAIN OUR ENVIRONMENT, REDUCES AND SAVES ENERGY. USE ANY CONTAINER YOU WANT: PAPER BAGS, CARDBOARD BOXES, OLD LAUNDRY BASKETS – YOU CAN EVEN USE TRASH CANS (JUST MARK IT “RECYCLING”). THE ONLY RULE? DO NOT PLACE RECYCLING IN PLASTIC BAGS. FILL YOUR CONTAINER WITH RECYCLABLES : PAPER, CANS, CARDBOARD, AND BOTTLES PUT OUT ALL THAT YOU CAN – THERE IS NO LIMIT TO THE AMOUNT OF RECYCLING YOU CAN PUT OUT.

WHAT KIND OF BINS ARE THERE? COMPOSTABLE BIN RECYCLING BIN WASTE BIN BOTTLE BIN
