AIR QUALITY OUTREACH THROUGH SOCIAL MEDIA Presented by Kellie J. Poolaw, Director of Environmental Programs Delaware Nation of Oklahoma

WHAT IS OUTREACH? n.- the act of extending services, benefits, etc., to a wider section of the population, as in community work. adj. -concerned with extending community services, benefits, etc.: an educational outreach program.

WHY IS OUTREACH IMPORTANT?  Provides an opportunity for community members to come together to obtain information regarding your tribe’s community programs.  Provides a way for community members to express opinions and for community decision makers to take these into consideration.  Provides community activities, interaction and services that might not otherwise be offered.  Provides organizations a way to get their positive message into the public domain.

OUTREACH TIPS FOR RURAL COMMUNITIES Identify your target audience. Create a clear & simple message Incorporate cultural & traditional values when appropriate. Be creative and explore a variety of outreach options. Obtain support from leaders and respected members of your community. Perform outreach to build partnerships. Use partnerships to increase the success of your outreach efforts. Take advantage of high profile events such as community dinners and school programs. Contact the local school superintendent or principals to schedule presentations. Use social media like Facebook and Twitter to reach younger community members.

WHY DOES THIS MATTER?  More than 50% of people get their news, , music and information from hand- held devices.  Communication is instantaneous.  Must utilize technology like websites and social networking sites like Facebook and Twitter.

WHAT IF I HATE FACEBOOK? DELEGATE IF YOU CAN. DEAL WITH IT IF YOU CAN’T. **Facebook is a valuable tool when trying to reach many people in an instant. The Delaware Nation Local Air Quality Group’s Facebook page gives air quality updates and health advisories when necessary.

GETTING STARTED Talk it up with your leadership and gain their support. Talk to and make friends with your IT Department to see if Facebook can be used at work. Decide what information you will include in your report. Utilize newsletters, newspapers, websites and social networking sites to build an database for your members. Begin sending reports. Always look for opportunities to grow your membership.

DELAWARE NATION LOCAL AIR QUALITY GROUP  Created by Jason Pruner as a way to keep community members informed of local air quality issues via .  Used to inform members of air quality concerns and health information.  Update expanded to include people from across the US.  Sent to members each week, detailing weather forecast, local AQI, current weather conditions and environmental tips.  Used as a tool to promote other departmental and tribal activities.  Included with report is usually a funny story or cartoon.

DELAWARE NATION SUCCESS THROUGH OUTREACH Worked with both Anadarko Public Schools and Riverside Indian School to introduce the 3R philosophy, sponsored contests and helped students through volunteer activities like the Anadarko Clean Sweep and Blue Thumb Program. Invited through the Anadarko Chamber of Commerce to participate in the PRIDE Beautification Committee. Local Tribes, Delaware, Wichita and Apache, worked together during April to promote anti-littering and supporting each other with individual activities. Worked with local radio station and newspaper to garner free and discounted advertising through PSA rates. Able to participate in more activities due to shared information through Local Air Quality Update.

ALWAYS USE HUMOR!

Remember to use every available media to reach your community!
