NOTIFIER Annual Distributor Conference October 3-6, 2004 Cooperative Sensing There are three generally accepted fire signatures; heat, smoke and light Only NOTIFIER looks at a fourth signature: uniform smoke spread Adds “distance” to the equation Smoke acts like a gas and will evenly disperse Increased response to uniformly distributed smoke Sampling over a wider area is more stable Reject isolated sources of false signals the panel looks at the values from adjacent devices rather than within one housing. The advantage to this approach is that it adds the element of distance into the decision making process. This acts to reduce response to spurious nuisance smoke, but reacts more quickly to uniform smoke spread.   In extensive testing it was learned that smoke acts like a gas and will spread uniformly in an area if it is not physically contained. This creates a better response signal in two ways. First, spurious nuisance smoke, for example from a cigarette, dilutes as it spreads. By the time it reaches the next sensor, it is too insignificant to be detected. On the other hand, smoke from a fire will spread evenly and the presence of smoke at adjacent devices is a strong indicator of a real fire situation.

Local area servers, telephone equipment, lab equipment and dozens of other areas are being provided high sensitivity supervision in order to allow the operator to intervene before serious damage is sustained. There is substantial return on investment just from reduced downtime when systems start to overheat.
