Welcome to St. Peter! Today by God’s grace we are privileged to begin a new Church Year. The first season is Advent which means “coming”. Our hymns, prayers and Scripture readings for this First Sunday in Advent remind us how judgment is coming, but in Jesus, our Advent Savior, there is deliverance for God’s people.

Welcome to St. Peter! There are friendship registers at the end of each row. Please take a moment to give us your information so that we have a record of your time with us today. Thank you!

The Advent of Our King CW #1 Verses 1-6 Text: Charles Coffin, Setting: ST. THOMAS Tune: Aaron Williams,

Verse 1: The advent of our King. Our prayers must now employ, And we must hymns of welcome sing In strains of holy joy.

Verse 2: The everlasting Son. Incarnate deigns to be, Himself a servant's form puts on To set his servants free.

Verse 3: O Zion's Daughter, rise. To meet your lowly King, Nor let a faithless heart despise The peace he comes to bring.

Verse 4: As judge, on clouds of light He soon will come again And his true members all unite With him in heav'n to reign.

Verse 5: Before the dawning Day Let sin's dark deeds be gone, The sinful self be put away, The new self now put on.

Verse 6 (Please Rise): All glory to the Son, Who comes to set us free, With Father, Spirit, ever one Through all eternity.

Opening Verses Pastor: The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ and the love of God and the fellowship of the Holy Spirit be with you. All: And also with you.

Confession of Sin Pastor: We have come into the presence of God, who created us to love and to serve him as his dear children. But we have disobeyed him and deserve only his wrath and punishment. Therefore, let us confess our sins to him and plead for his mercy.

Confession of Sin All: Merciful Father in heaven, I am altogether sinful from birth. In countless ways I have sinned against you and do not deserve to be called your child.

Confession of Sin All: But trusting in Jesus, my Savior, I pray: Have mercy on me according to your unfailing love. Cleanse me from my sin, and take away my guilt.

(Pastor announces our forgiveness) All: Amen.

Pastor: In the peace of forgiveness, let us praise the Lord.

Oh, Taste and See All (Sung): Oh, taste and see that the Lord is good. Blessed are they who take refuge in him. Your Word, O Lord, is eternal; it stands firm in the heavens.

Oh, Taste and See All: Your faithfulness continues forever. Oh, taste and see that the Lord is good. Blessed are they who take refuge in him.

Prayer of the Day Pastor: Let us pray. (The pastor says the Prayer of the Day.)

God’s Word to His People Genesis 19:15-17, Judgment for the ungodly, deliverance for the godly

God’s Word to His People 1 Thessalonians 3:9-13 Live faithfully until the Lord comes

Pastor: Alleluia. He who testifies to these things says, “Yes, I am coming soon.” Amen. Come, Lord Jesus. Alleluia. Verse of the Day

Children’s Message

Savior of the Nations, Come CW #2 Verses 1-5 Text: Ambrose of Milan, Setting: NUN KOMM, DER HEIDEN HEILAND Tune: Johann Walther,

Verse 1: Savior of the nations, come; Virgin's Son, make here your home. Marvel now, O heav'n and earth, That the Lord chose such a birth.

Verse 2: Not by human flesh and blood, By the Spirit of our God Was the Word of God made flesh, Woman's offspring, pure and fresh.

Verse 3: Wondrous birth! O wondrous Child Of the Spirit undefiled, Though by all the world disowned, Yet to be in heav'n enthroned!

Verse 4: From the Father's throne he came And ascended to the same, Captive leading death and hell— High the song of triumph swell!

Verse 5: Praise to God the Father sing, Praise to God the Son, our King, Praise to God the Spirit be Ever and eternally.

“Lord, As We Begin A New (Church) Year We Pray…!”

Apostles’ Creed All: I believe in God, the Father almighty, maker of heaven and earth.

Apostles’ Creed All: I believe in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried.

Apostles’ Creed All: He descended into hell. The third day he rose again from the dead. He ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of God the Father almighty. From there he will come to judge the living and the dead.

Apostles’ Creed All: I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy Christian Church. the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen.

In thankfulness for our salvation, we support God’s work with our offerings.

Prayer of the Church Pastor: Eternal Father, throughout the centuries you repeated and affirmed your promise to send the offspring of the woman to crush the serpent’s head. Through your prophets of old, you continually directed the eyes of your people to the advent of their Savior.

Prayer of the Church All: We praise you, O Lord, for keeping your promise and sending your Son to destroy the works of the devil.

Prayer of the Church Pastor: As we prepare to celebrate the birth of our King, use your mighty Word to shatter our pride and to rouse us from spiritual slumber and apathy.

Prayer of the Church All: Move us to take to heart the words of John: “Repent, for the kingdom of heaven is near.”

Prayer of the Church Pastor: You sent your Son to redeem us from sin. Let this good news be our joy and strength. Use it to cheer the lonely, encourage the fearful, and give hope to the despairing. In these days before Christmas, spare us from the stress of deadlines and the frenzy of commercialism.

Prayer of the Church All: Fill our lives with the message of your peace and the music of your grace.

Prayer of the Church Pastor: Direct our eyes not only to the manger but also to the skies, where we will see your Son coming again, not as a lowly child but as the Lord of lords.

Prayer of the Church All: Lift up our hearts in joyful anticipation of that day.

Prayer of the Church Pastor: (Special prayers and intercessions may follow.) Hear us, Lord, as we bring you our private petitions. (Silent Prayer)

Prayer of the Church Pastor: Come quickly, Lord Jesus, in your grace, in your power, and in your glory.

Prayer of the Church All: Come, Lord Jesus! Amen.

Lord’s Prayer All: Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name, your kingdom come, your will be done on earth as in heaven. Give us today our daily bread.

Lord’s Prayer All: Forgive us our sins, as we forgive those who sin against us. Lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil.

Lord’s Prayer All: For the kingdom, the power, and the glory are yours now and forever. Amen

God’s Blessing Pastor: The Lord bless you and keep you. The Lord make his face shine on you and be gracious to you. The Lord look on you with favor and give you peace. All: Amen.

Rise, My Soul, to Watch and Pray CW #472 Text: Johann B. Freystein, Setting: STRAF MICH NICHT Tune: Johann Rosenmüller, , alt.

Verse 1 Rise, my soul, to watch and pray; From your sleep awaken! Be not by the evil day Unawares o'ertaken. For the foe, Well we know, Is a harvest reaping While the saints are sleeping.

Verse 2 Watch! Let not the wicked world With its lies defeat you Lest with bold deceptions hurled It betray and cheat you. Watch an see Lest there be Faithless friends to charm you Who but seek to harm you.

Verse 3 Watch against yourself, my soul, Lest with grace you trifle; Let not self your thoughts control Nor God's mercy stifle. Pride and sin Lurk within, All your hopes to shatter; Heed not when they flatter.

Verse 4 But while watching also pray To the Lord unceasing. God protects you day by day, Strength and faith increasing. So that still Mind and will Shall unite to serve him And forever love him.

Silent Prayer
