1 Cor. 11:1-16

1 Be ye imitators of me, even as I also am of Christ. 1 Be ye imitators of me, even as I also am of Christ. 2 Now I praise you that ye remember me in all things, and hold fast the traditions, even as I delivered them to you. 2 Now I praise you that ye remember me in all things, and hold fast the traditions, even as I delivered them to you. 3 But I would have you know, that the head of every man is Christ; and the head of the woman is the man; and the head of Christ is God. 3 But I would have you know, that the head of every man is Christ; and the head of the woman is the man; and the head of Christ is God. WHAT ABOUT THE VEIL? I. WHAT WAS THE ISSUE? A. Praised for holding apostolic traditions. B. “BUT” problem with submission. 1 Cor. 11

4 Every man praying or prophesying, having his head covered, dishonoreth his head. 4 Every man praying or prophesying, having his head covered, dishonoreth his head. 5 But every woman praying or prophesying with her head unveiled dishonoreth her head; for it is one and the same thing as if she were shaven. 5 But every woman praying or prophesying with her head unveiled dishonoreth her head; for it is one and the same thing as if she were shaven. WHAT ABOUT THE VEIL? 1 Cor. 11 II. CONTEXT CLUES A. Praying or Prophesying - Religious activity. - Not necessarily miraculous. - Not necessarily in assembly.

1 Cor. 11 II. CONTEXT CLUES B. “Covered” or “veiled” (2619) - Verb “to cover, to hang down” - Needs a clarifier. “Cover a lamp with a vessel” (Lk 8:16). - It could describe what hair does or an artificial covering.

5 But every woman praying or prophesying with her head unveiled dishonoreth her head; for it is one and the same thing as if she were shaven. 6 For if a woman is not veiled, let her also be shorn: but if it is a shame to a woman to be shorn or shaven, let her be veiled. WHAT ABOUT THE VEIL? 1 Cor. 11 II. CONTEXT CLUES C. “As if” – “Also” - Compared to shaven or shorn. - I.e. Problem was NOT shaved or shorn hair, but violating the principle of “to hang down”.

7 For a man indeed ought not to have his head veiled, forasmuch as he is the image and glory of God: but the woman is the glory of the man. 8 For the man is not of the woman; but the woman of the man: 8 For the man is not of the woman; but the woman of the man: 9 for neither was the man created for the woman; but the woman for the man: 9 for neither was the man created for the woman; but the woman for the man: 10 for this cause ought the woman to have a sign of authority on her head, because of the angels. 10 for this cause ought the woman to have a sign of authority on her head, because of the angels. WHAT ABOUT THE VEIL? 1 Cor. 11 III. BASIS FOR THE DISTINCTION A. Rank, Order & Purpose of Creation

11 Nevertheless, neither is the woman without the man, nor the man without the woman, in the Lord. 11 Nevertheless, neither is the woman without the man, nor the man without the woman, in the Lord. 12 For as the woman is of the man, so is the man also by the woman; but all things are of God. 12 For as the woman is of the man, so is the man also by the woman; but all things are of God. WHAT ABOUT THE VEIL? 1 Cor. 11 III. BASIS FOR THE DISTINCTION B. Balanced Though Distinct: - Interdependence. - Spiritual equality / value.

13 Judge ye in yourselves: is it seemly that a woman pray unto God unveiled? 13 Judge ye in yourselves: is it seemly that a woman pray unto God unveiled? 14 Doth not even nature itself teach you, that, if a man have long hair, it is a dishonor to him? 14 Doth not even nature itself teach you, that, if a man have long hair, it is a dishonor to him? WHAT ABOUT THE VEIL? 1 Cor. 11 IV. MORE CONTEXT CLUES A. Judge – Decide, conclude. C. Nature - phusis (5449) as in Eph. 2:3. The Questions Is NOT: “Should women be covered?” But WITH WHAT Should They Cover? B. Seemly – Suitable, proper.

15 But if a woman have long hair, it is a glory to her: for her hair is given her for a covering. WHAT ABOUT THE VEIL? 1 Cor. 11 V. MORE DEFINITIONS: A. Long hair – “tresses, locks” B. A covering – Peribolaion (4018) “something thrown around one, i.e. a mantle, veil:--covering, vesture. As in Heb. 1:12. C. “For” – anti (473) “opposite, i.e. instead… in the room of…”

Her hair is given her for a covering. (ASV) WHAT ABOUT THE VEIL? 1 Cor. 11 Because the hair instead of a covering hath been given to her; (YLT) Her hair is given her for a covering. (KJV) The long hair is given [to her] in lieu of a veil. (DBY) Her hair is given to her in place of a veil. (MKJV) Her hair has been given her instead of a veil. (MNT) Is There Any Doubt What Is & Is Not God Given?

16 But if any man seem to be contentious, we have no such custom, neither the churches of God. 16 But if any man seem to be contentious, we have no such custom, neither the churches of God. WHAT ABOUT THE VEIL? 1 Cor. 11 VI. THE LAST VERSE A. Contentious – Against showing submission by wearing a wrap. 1 Cor. 8:1 Knowledge w/o love. 1 Cor. 9:20To Jews… 1 Cor. 10:23-24, 32 Lawful, but edifying? 1 Cor. 13:1-3 Act without love.

- A wrap (man’s custom) parallels God’s principle of submission. So, don’t cast it off. - Slavery (man’s invention) is regulated by God (Eph. 6:5-9; Philemon) & parallels His principle of submission.

WHAT ABOUT THE VEIL? 1 Cor. 11 CONCLUSION: A. God gave the hair to fulfill the principle “to cover”. B. When a practice exists that parallels God’s principles, we should not be contentious due to our liberty! C. MUST women wear an artificial wrap today? Except for personal conscience sake (Rom. 14), no.

“For the law was given by Moses, but grace and truth came by Jesus Christ.” God Calls Baptism “Grace & Truth”! Baptism into Christ for the remission of sins is not revealed in the Old Law. Therefore, baptism is “grace and truth”! (Eph. 2:8; John 8:32)
