POETRY REVIEW DAY FOR REGENTS June 10th

Work Handed In I will hand back work. Please give me any homework that you have not given me yet.

Poem Performance We will take a look at the poem performances. For Period 4, what do you think the main idea of the poem was? LET US ALL TAKE A LOOK AT “PHENOMENAL WOMAN” Let us Re-analyze. Make sure to look at EVERY STANZA to see…. -What is the main idea and what literary elements / techniques does Maya Angelou use to drive home her main idea? (the controlling idea)

Re-Analyze

Blank Verse Blank verse consists of unrhymed lines of iambic pentameter (ten syllables with the second, fourth, sixth, eighth, and tenth syllables accented). The form has generally been accepted as the best for dramatic verse in English and is commonly used for long poems whether dramatic, philosophical, or narrative.

Free Verse Free Verse is poetry that is based on the irregular rhythmic cadence recurring, with variations of phrases, images, and syntactical patterns rather than the conventional use of meter. In other words, free verse has no rhythm scheme or pattern. However, much poetic language and devices are found in free verse.

Sonnet A 14-line poem with a variable rhyme scheme originating in Italy and brought to England bySir Thomas Wyatt and Henry Howard, earl of Surrey in the 16th century. Literally a “little song,” the sonnet traditionally reflects upon a single sentiment, with a clarification or “turn” of thought in its concluding lines. Sir Thomas WyattHenry Howard, earl of Surrey

Couplet Rhyming stanzas made up of two lines. A pair of lines of a verse that form a unit. Some couplets rhyme aa, but this is not a requirement. A new borns cry Tearful last good bye Swaying waves of golden prairie grass Shifting desert dunes - an hour glass An acorn dropping among forest leaves To mighty oak - a lifetime of dreams The changing moon - to full again Each morn' the sun - new skies begin Eagles soar high - our hearts go there These ripples in time - we all share

Ballad Strictly, a ballad is a form of poetry that alternates lines of four and three beats, often telling a story.

Together we will analyze two poems from the Regents Exam Think: What is the main idea of this poem? What literary elements / techniques did the author use?

Answer Poem Questions We will answer the questions that go along with the poem. Answer the questions and explain why you got the answer you did. We’ll review basic poetry terms tomorrow.
