2 Timothy 3:10-17

Don't Advance - Don't Go Forward Contrast between verses 13 and "proceed" means "advance" or "go forward" 2. "continue" word for "remain," "abide," "stay.“ Conserve what? Remain in what? Stay with what? Abide in what? "... knowing from whom you have learned them, and that from childhood you have known the sacred writings...“ "Scriptures"

Reasons to Continue Steadfastly in the Word 1. The Quality of Your Teachers Verse 14b: "... knowing from whom you have learned them, and that from childhood you have known the sacred writings.“ Acts 16:1: "the son of a Jewish woman who was a believer, but his father was a Greek." 2 Timothy 1:5: "For I am mindful of the sincere faith within you, which first dwelt in your grandmother Lois and your mother Eunice, and I am sure that it is in you as well."

Reasons to Continue Steadfastly in the Word 2. The Valuable Outcome of the Word Verse 15: "that from childhood you have known the sacred writings which are able to give you the wisdom that leads to salvation through faith which is in Christ Jesus.” Verses 16 and 17: "All Scripture is inspired by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, for training in righteousness; so that the man of God may be adequate, equipped for every good work."

How Can We Be Committed to the Word? 1. Embrace and Anticipate Sufferings (v ) In 1:8ff, Paul encouraged Timothy to not be ashamed of the gospel and to share in suffering for the gospel. Likewise, in 2:3ff, Paul tells Timothy to be a good soldier who is willing to share in suffering. The list of characteristics in verse 10 contrasts the characteristics in 3:2-5 Paul notes that he was able to endure these persecutions because the Lord rescued me.

How Can We Be Committed to the Word? 2. Trust the Scripture (v. 14b-17) First, he mentions that the Word will make one wise for salvation. Second, Paul notes that the Scriptures are profitable for our sanctification. Because of divine inspiration, we can believe and trust that the Bible is inerrant (without error), authoritative, and sufficient.
