THE ALOHA STATE  Motto: “The Life of the Land is Perpetuated in Righteousness”  Population: Ranked 42 nd in the U.S.  Median Income: $63,746  Time Zone: no daylight savings time  Transportation: Only O’ahu has federal highways – only area outside the 48 states to have signed Interstate Highways  All local governments are administered at the county level – no municipal governments

General Description  The newest of the 50 U.S. States admitted to Union (Aug. 21, 1959).  Tourism- the largest industry (24.3% of Gross State Product)  Exports- coffee, macadamia nuts, pineapple, livestock and sugarcane  Hawaii had highest state tax per capita $2,838.  Hundreds of islands spread over 1,500 miles.  Over 1 million permanent residents.  Capital: Honolulu (the largest city)

Unique Features  The only U.S. State made up entirely of islands.  President Barack Obama – the only president to hail from the state.
