French Revolution France’s War to bring down the monarchy and replaced with idea of equality and inalienable rights. Jay’s Treaty – treaty with Britain over trade. It was written by Alexander Hamilton and negotiated by John Jay.

Federalists American political party founded in the 1790’s by Alexander Hamilton. They supported a federal government with a lot of power with a national bank to pay for the war. Jeffersonian/Democratic-Republicans American political party founded in the early 1790s by Thomas Jefferson and James Madison. Named after Thomas Jefferson, and is the political idea supporting a federal government with limited powers and advocating a strict interpretation of the U.S. Constitution.

THOMAS JEFFERSON April 13, 1743– July 4, 1826 A Founding Father Author of the Declaration of Independence President of the United States from 1801 to 1809 Co-founder and leader of the Democratic- Republican Party Created the Jeffersonian Democracy, a political idea supporting a national government, but with greatly limited powers. He advocated for a strict interpretation of the U.S. Constitution so the national government couldn’t get too powerful. He wanted the states to be able to decide for their own people, not the federal government in Washington.

CHARLES PINCKNEY October 26, 1757 – October 29, 1824 Author of the Pinckney Draft 1787 which was the basis for the Constitution of the United States. Changed his political views to include the common man Became a supporter of Thomas Jefferson and supported Jefferson for President. Government should have 3 parts: President, Congress and the Supreme Court. Favored individual religious freedom and protection from government authorities. Favored states' rights and a limited federal government

March 16, 1751 – June 28, 1836 Fourth President of the United States (1809–1817). He is known as the “Father of the Constitution”. He played an important part in the writing of the United States Constitution One of the authors of the United States Bill of Rights. He was a slaveholder and he inherited his plantation known as Montpelier. He and Alexander Hamilton and John Jay produced the Federalist Papers (1788). Madison changed his political views during his life. When the constitution was written, he favored a strong national government. Later he grew to favor stronger state governments. James Madison, Jr.
