Last Supper

 Now we must take a look at the Paschal Mystery on a much closer level The first step/ event in this mystery is what?  The Last Supper What does the article say about the Last Supper?  How does it echo our celebration of the Eucharist? board

Last Supper  The Last Supper was the gathering of Jesus and his 12 apostles to celebrate Passover Why was Jesus and the apostles celebrating Passover?  What is the holiday about?  Passover celebrated the freeing of the Jews through death of the Egyptians Their saving through blood It celebrates sacrifice for freedom

Last Supper  In this same theme, this was in every Jew’s’ mind during Passover A call of remembrance to their ancestors  Jesus knew this and also knew his Last Supper was going to reflect this theme as well However, only Jesus knew his fate and destiny at this point  It would foreshadow his coming death and resurrection

Last Supper  Jesus’ death and resurrection would finalize the new covenant Just as Passover symbolizes freedom through sacrifice, the Last Supper would symbolize the same for the apostles through Jesus

Last Supper  Through the Last Supper and Paschal Mystery, Jesus sacrificed his life Our partaking in the Eucharist, a continuing ritual and tradition from the Last Supper, calls us to do the same as well  We will need to sacrifice in our life  As disciples, sacrifice will be required to follow Jesus’ footsteps

Last Supper  To partake in the Last Supper, we must understand the purpose of the Eucharist and the challenges that echo from the Early Christians to today We have to read and understand Jesus’ words to his apostles.

The Lord’s Supper  Read (1 Cor 11: 17-34) Why is Paul, the author, upset at this group in Corinth?  What is the community doing wrong?  Because the people of Corinth are abusing and not fully understanding the Eucharist and its ritual

The Lord’s Supper  The members or Corinth are using the celebration of the Eucharist as a meal to fill hunger and a drink to get drunk 1. They are abusing its practice, disrespecting God and the sacrament Jesus gave us, before his death 2. People are supposed to eat at home, not fill on the body of Christ 3. They are not gathering and celebrating as one community in worship. Instead they are doing it individually 4. The community of followers has become divided in their beliefs and gatherings

The Lord’s Supper  How does Paul mention the reverence of the Eucharist? Read line The Last Supper was done by Jesus on his last night before he was arrested He gave bread and wine (his body and blood) to the apostles, to remember and celebrate Jesus Jesus stated, when you do this, it is in remembrance of me  Essentially, Jesus would be present with through this celebration, with those gathered

The Lord’s Supper  With this understanding of reverence and respect, what does Paul state about those who abuse or mistreat the celebration? What punishment do the people of Corinth suffer?

The Lord’s Supper  Paul states that those who eat and drink unworthily will have to answer, in their judgment to God Those who eat for hunger (bodily needs) must re- examine their belief and selves We see at this part of the passage, Paul calls all of the followers to re-examine their faith and motives  What is this reflecting of?  Paul declares this is the reason for many of the people being ill and dying It is their punishment for their abuse of the Body and Blood of Christ

The Lord’s Supper  What does Paul say on how to correct their ways and get back upon the right path to God?

The Lord’s Supper  Paul urges the believers to celebrate the meal as one community, one body If people have hunger, they are to take care of this at home (eating a meal).  Not through abusing the celebration of Christ They are to understand the importance of the ritual Jesus set before them and understand that their participation brings Jesus’ presence among them  This will quell the judgment God is passing down on you
