Configuring Windows XP-Based Laptops for Guest Access to Bloomsburg University’s Wireless Network Intended for University staff, and guests planning to visit Bloomsburg University

Instruction for: Event attendees, conference attendees, off-campus guests, University staff associated with off- campus guests PC Laptops Windows Service Pack 2 (SP2) or higher

Agenda Requirements Computer owner Interaction Tips Known problems and possible solutions Questions / Concerns Live guided demonstration Questions Complete the Learner Satisfaction Survey

What you need: A laptop computer Windows XP with Service Pack 2 or higher installed A properly configured and functional B or G (WiFi) (internal / external) wireless network card An account consisting of a USER NAME, PASSWORD, and DOMAIN Temporary account information for use during your event Provided by event organizer.

Configuring Another Person’s Computer ALWAYS ask the owner if they will allow you to touch or make changes to the settings.  If they say no, then you can either direct them to the settings, or provide them with written steps. If the computer is connected to a projector or other large scale viewing device, allow the computer image to project so that they can watch you make changes.  This may help to reduce owner anxiety levels.

What If… The person’s computer does not have SP2 or higher installed?  Attempt to configure the wireless using key settings  Ask the person to download the appropriate updates This takes time (no matter what type of internet connection you use) and is physically impossible to complete quickly. NOTE: Updating another person’s computer is NOT your responsibility.

What If… The person does not have administrative access to the computer settings?  That person needs to acquire administrative privileges  If they cannot acquire administrative privileges: They won’t be able to use the wireless network They must use a wired connection for internet access

What are the key settings? Selecting "Protected EAP (PEAP)" as the EAP type is the key to the puzzle. Uncheck “Automatically use my Windows login name and password.” Enter appropriate Username and Password. DO NOT enter a Domain name. Approve Validation Certificate.

Known Problems Most recent driver is not installed or no driver is installed.  Driver – “A program that controls a device. Every device, whether it be a printer, disk drive, or keyboard, must have a driver program. Many drivers, such as the keyboard driver, come with the operating system. For other devices, you may need to load a new driver when you connect the device to your computer…In Windows environments, drivers often have a.DRV extension. A driver acts like a translator between the device and programs that use the device. Each device has its own set of specialized commands that only its driver knows….” Source:

Driver problem solution Have the person download the appropriate driver and resume setup. Find and install the appropriate driver and resume setup.  If they cannot locate the appropriate driver: They won’t be able to use the wireless network They must use a wired connection for internet access

Known Problems, cont. A laptop using an external wireless card may have to be configured slightly differently  The card’s wizard or utility feature may complicate the setup.  These utilities don’t allow Windows to configure the setup  This will occur with most Dell computers Utility could be associated with internal wireless as well.

External Card Utility Solution  Best Solution is to disable the utility function This may take time to locate Multiple Computer restarts maybe necessary The owner should resolve this issue prior to arrival  Locate the key configuration requirements within the menu and input the key settings.

Can anyone think of other possible problems?

Let’s run through it!

What do you see first? Why don’t I see that screen now?  Chances are that you are not on the BU campus and your computer does not detect our wireless network.

Confusion… Most people get stuck on this screen. WEP does require login information but further setup options are required.

More Confusion… Selecting "Protected EAP (PEAP)" as the EAP type is the key to the puzzle.

However… If this box is left checked, then configuration will try to validate the incorrect information.

Click this… Now we’re getting closer. This balloon means that our computer is talking to the BU network because it’s looking for information. Why won’t you see that message now?

Checkin’ your ID… We’re carding your computer. Type buconf for the USER NAME Type hillsroll for the PASSWORD This is temporary login information

Very Important! DO NOT enter a "Logon domain." The "Logon domain:" field must be left BLANK to enable guest access. If you put something in there, it won’t work.

We’re all looking for Validation This tells the network that we’re all speaking the same language. Click OK and you’re home free. Test the internet connection. Why won’t you see that message now?
