JOHN 3:16 For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life

JOHN 13:23 There was reclining on Jesus' bosom one of His disciples, whom Jesus loved (NASB)

A Gospel… a historical account of Jesus’ life and teachings that explains his spiritual significance

Synoptic Gospels Matthew, Mark, Luke… Means “to see together”

Son of Man… (Mark 2:10) – But that you may know that the Son of Man has authority on earth to forgive sins" (Jn. 1:51) – And he said to him, "Truly, truly, I say to you, you will see heaven opened, and the angels of God ascending and descending on the Son of Man.

Son of God… (Mark 1:1) – The beginning of the gospel of Jesus Christ, the Son of God (Jn. 1:34) – And I have seen and have borne witness that this is the Son of God.".

Savior… (Matt. 1:21) – She will bear a son, and you shall call his name Jesus, for he will save his people from their sins." (Jn. 3:16) – "For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life.

JOHN 21:25 Now there are also many other things that Jesus did. Were every one of them to be written, I suppose that the world itself could not contain the books that would be written

Carson & Moo They represent an interlocking tradition, that is…they mutually reinforce or explain each other

JOHN 18:31 Pilate said to them, "Take him yourselves and judge him by your own law." The Jews said to him, "It is not lawful for us to put anyone to death."

JOHN 18:15-16 Simon Peter followed Jesus, and so did another disciple. Since that disciple was known to the high priest, he entered with Jesus into the courtyard of the high priest, but Peter stood outside at the door. So the other disciple, who was known to the high priest, went out and spoke to the servant girl who kept watch at the door, and brought Peter in.

JOHN 6:15 Perceiving then that they were about to come and take him by force to make him king, Jesus withdrew again to the mountain by himself.

Author… 1.He tells us that He was An EYEWITNESS to the Accounts in the Gospel 2.More Clues from the Phrase “the Disciple who Jesus loved”… 3.More Clues in the Final Chapter of the Gospel…

JOHN 1:35-37 The next day again John was standing with two of his disciples, and he looked at Jesus as he walked by and said, "Behold, the Lamb of God!" The two disciples heard him say this, and they followed Jesus… One of the two who heard John speak and followed Jesus was Andrew, Simon Peter's brother.

Matthew 4:18-22 While walking by the Sea of Galilee, he saw two brothers, Simon (who is called Peter) and Andrew his brother, casting a net into the sea, for they were fishermen. And he said to them, "Follow me, and I will make you fishers of men." Immediately they left their nets and followed him. And going on from there he saw two other brothers, James the son of Zebedee and John his brother, in the boat with Zebedee their father, mending their nets, and he called them. Immediately they left the boat and their father and followed him

Jesus’ Inner Circle… (Matt 17:1) – Jesus *took with Him Peter and James and John his brother, and *led them up on a high mountain by themselves. (Mk. 5:37) – And He allowed no one to accompany Him, except Peter and James and John the brother of James (Mk. 14:32-33) – They *came to a place named Gethsemane; and He *said to His disciples, "Sit here until I have prayed." And He *took with Him Peter and James and John, and began to be very distressed and troubled.

Mark 3:17 James the son of Zebedee and John the brother of James (to whom he gave the name Boanerges, that is, Sons of Thunder)

Luke 9:51-55 When the days drew near for him to be taken up, he set his face to go to Jerusalem. And he sent messengers ahead of him, who went and entered a village of the Samaritans, to make preparations for him. But the people did not receive him, because his face was set toward Jerusalem. And when his disciples James and John saw it, they said, "Lord, do you want us to tell fire to come down from heaven and consume them?" But he turned and rebuked them

Matthew 20:20-23 Then the mother of the sons of Zebedee came up to him with her sons, and kneeling before him she asked him for something. And he said to her, "What do you want?" She said to him, "Say that these two sons of mine are to sit, one at your right hand and one at your left, in your kingdom.“…

Matthew 20:20-23 …Jesus answered, "You do not know what you are asking. Are you able to drink the cup that I am to drink?" They said to him, "We are able." He said to them, "You will drink my cup, but to sit at my right hand and at my left is not mine to grant, but it is for those for whom it has been prepared by my Father."

Matthew 20:25-28 But Jesus called them to him and said, "You know that the rulers of the Gentiles lord it over them, and their great ones exercise authority over them. It shall not be so among you. But whoever would be great among you must be your servant, and whoever would be first among you must be your slave, even as the Son of Man came not to be served but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many."

JOHN 19:26-27 When Jesus saw his mother and the disciple whom he loved standing nearby, he said to his mother, "Woman, behold, your son!" Then he said to the disciple, "Behold, your mother!" And from that hour the disciple took her to his own home

1 John 4:7-12 Beloved, let us love one another, for love is from God, and whoever loves has been born of God and knows God. Anyone who does not love does not know God, because God is love. In this the love of God was made manifest among us, that God sent his only Son into the world, so that we might live through him. In this is love, not that we have loved God but that he loved us and sent his Son to be the propitiation for our sins…

1 John 4:7-12 …Beloved, if God so loved us, we also ought to love one another. No one has ever seen God; if we love one another, God abides in us and his love is perfected in us.

Outline… Prologue (1:1-18) The Book of Signs (1:19 – 12:50) The Book of Glory (13:1 – 20:31) Epilogue (21:1-25)

John 20:30-31 Now Jesus did many other signs in the presence of the disciples, which are not written in this book; but these are written so that you may believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God, and that by believing you may have life in his name
