Learning Styles and Subject Specific Learning Definition Questionaire Discussion Group Project More resources

Learning Style Definition One’s preferred manner of acquiring, using, and thinking about knowledge. We don’t have just one learning style, we have a variety of learning styles.

VARK definitions Visual-refers to learning style that involves the utilization of seeing and observing things. i.e.- When one seeks travel directions, they need to look at a map or one that learns a new skill has to see what the teacher is doing Audio-the gaining of information through listening. i.e.-one may ask for directions or talk through with a teacher exactly what one is supposed to do. Reading-preference towards gaining information displayed as words, this could be reading and writing. i.e.- One would rather read a manual or a report . Kinesthetic- the tendency to gain information through physical experience. i.e.-one may seek travel by following their five senses such as their nose or the sun or learn a new skill by trying something out and acting it out.

Take the VARK questionnaire!! Click here please.

VARK discussion points Discuss your VARK learning style with your group. Do you agree with the results? Disagree? Are you a blend of different learning styles or only one type of learning style? Why might it be important to be good at all four learning styles and how might this be important to tutoring?

more VARK discussion points Think about when you had a difficult time in a class because of the professor’s teaching style. What was his/her teaching style? What could it tell you about his/her learning style? How might you have adjusted to his/her teaching style to better understand the class? Now ask these same q’s while thinking about a previous group project experience.

Resource Building project In your groups, come up with some possible tutor resources Think of tangible subjects these resources might be useful for. i.e.- Math, Science, Writing, Language Arts. Post your resources on the butcher paper. Then present your findings to the group.
