The Unwritten Laws of Engineering

Now I want to pass on to you the twelve unwritten Laws of Engineering. The laws were written by W.J.King and first published in 1944 by the Am. Society of Mechanical Engineers. They are now available on the Internet at ormation/Careers/Career_Library1/Unwritten_Laws_of_E ngineering.doc ormation/Careers/Career_Library1/Unwritten_Laws_of_E ngineering.doc Foreword Success in engineering depends upon a lot more than technical skill. The chief obstacles to success are likely to be of a personal and administrative nature

The Unwritten Laws of Engineering 9) Be interested in the people who work with or for you, and treat them as you would want to be treated.

The Unwritten Laws of Engineering 1) However menial and trivial your early assignments may appear, give them your best efforts

The Unwritten Laws of Engineering 2) There is always a premium upon the ability to get things done, and this requires energy, resourcefulness, and persistence

The Unwritten Laws of Engineering 3) Before asking for approval of any major action, have a definite plan and program worked out to support it.

The Unwritten Laws of Engineering 4) Strive for conciseness and clarity in oral and written reports.

The Unwritten Laws of Engineering 5) Be extremely careful of the accuracy of your statements

The Unwritten Laws of Engineering 6) One of the first things you owe your boss is to keep him informed of all significant developments.

The Unwritten Laws of Engineering 7) Whenever your work affects another department or another employee, make sure they know what you are doing and why.

The Unwritten Laws of Engineering 8) Get the facts, make an analysis, apply judgment, and make a decision; do not vacillate.

The Unwritten Laws of Engineering 10) Regard your personal integrity as one of your most important assets.

The Unwritten Laws of Engineering 11) Be careful of your personal appearance; if you would be an executive, look the part.

The Unwritten Laws of Engineering 12) You should make an effort to learn what is expected of you in your job. People do form first impressions of you; people do appraise your appearance, the way you conduct yourself, and your ability to accomplish assigned tasks; and these evaluations are being made all the time.

The Unwritten Laws of Engineering To summarize: I have presented to you information on some of the more interesting projects that I have worked on in my career as a Civil Engineer More importantly, I have given you some invaluable rules on how to conduct yourself as Engineers.
