Table of Contents Status of Electric Drivers –Modifications Implemented –Delivery Schedules –Ongoing Work Evaluation/Recommendations for Air Drivers –HE type –HB type
Electric Diver – Modifications Implemented Source Wire Reel and Wire Support system –Source Wire Reel. Reel is mounted on captive roller bearings. Provides stable low-friction operation of reel. Allows monitoring of drive motor current to serve as a useful diagnostic tool of system health. Reel manufactured of MDS Nylon for low friction and excellent abrasion resistance. –Lower Support Wire/Spring fingers. Provide even support underneath source wire. Eliminate escape holes in reel base plate. Isolate source wire from seam between reel and reel base plate. –This set of modifications work together to prevent the most serious form of driver failure: source wire ejection and destruction. Testing so far is promising, but more is needed, particularly regarding wear of the lower support wire.
Electric Diver – Modifications Implemented General Mechanical Modifications –A variety of mechanical improvements were implemented to enhance the overall long-term reliability of the units. Some examples are: Elimination of unnecessary mechanical linkages and adjustment points Spring Centering mechanism on reel end-stop mechanism Guard plates for sensitive mechanisms
Electric Driver Delivery 2 Modified Drivers delivered to CERN; Icarus01, Icarus02 –Icarus01 currently sourcing HE- –Icarus02 currently sourcing HB+ 2 more drivers to ship Nov.1; Icarus03, Icarus04 –Icarus03 to be used in HF fingerprinting –Icarus04 as spare on site More Drivers are in shipment to Iowa to receive modifications
Electric Drivers – Ongoing Work HE/HB/HF fingerprinting in Fall 2005 constitutes an extensive ‘on site’ testing phase of the modified drivers. After fingerprinting drivers should be torn down and evaluated. –Identify wear and establish normal service interval and procedures –Identify any further mechanical refinements needed Continue to develop support infrastructure –Spare parts, tools, documentation
HE type Air Driver
Air Drivers - General Air drivers are quite different from electric drivers Some Electric Driver improvements directly extend to Air devices –Reel System, adaptations for non-magnetic bearing and vert. clearance –Lower support wire and spring finger system Pneumatic Drive, Indexer, and mechanical layout are very different –There are immediately apparent improvements Replace plastic air lines with copper and more permanent connectors Mount loose components solidly Tie down wiring Reel end stop centering system
Air Drivers - General Other refinements will require more experience with the driver –Air Drivers have very different operational behaviors. Air motor torque/speed Pecking behavior How to monitor reel/wire friction and forces? –Long Term testing needed to flush out potential problems Long term testing in Magnetic Field
Deliver one HE and one HB type driver for Magnet Test –Time only to implement core improvements Reel/Support Wire system Secure loose components Stronger pneumatic system –HE driver delivered to CERN Dec 5,2005 –HB driver to CERN no later than Feb. 1, 2006 Exercise Drivers in B field Continue to study driver behaviors with units in workshop After Mag. Test incorporate additional refinements Air Drivers – Action Plans
Air Drivers - Misc Iowa Currently has 1 HE driver –3 more in shipment to Iowa, sufficient for current needs 2 HB drivers are needed at Iowa –1 outfitted for mag. Test –2 remains at Iowa for testing
