Luminous Dials………OF DEATH!!!! By: Ian Simms Period 8

History of The Luminous Watches Luminous radium dials were first used around 1910 before the dangers of radioactivity was fully understood. After WWI and through out the 1920s, radium dials became popular and were widely used on watches and clocks. In the late 1920s, it became obvious that the girls and women who painted the dials were suffering and sometimes dying from health complications caused by the radium.

The Dangerous Dust The Radioactive paint is put in the watches for visible items. After years the paint breaks down to dust particles. Most people when they clean their watches accidentally breath in this dust and are affected.

Ways To protect Yourself Don’t breath in dust when cleaning watch Send watch in to professional old watch cleaners Get watches with non-radioactive paint
