Current Safety Status Phase III Flight Safety Review 12 Jan 2009

Flight Safety Review Timeline Phase 0/I Flight Safety Review – Jun 2000 – AMS-02 VC Leakage SDM – October 2001 – AMS-02 Gauss Limit SDM – October 2001 – AMS-02 Safety TIM – January 2003 Phase II Flight Safety Review – May 2007 – AMS-02 Hazard Report TIM – October 2007 – AMS-02 NCR TIM – December 2008 – AMS-02 Burst Disk Testing TIM – August 2009 Phase III Flight Safety Review – January 2010

Major Events Since Phase II Completed manufacturing and assembly of the scientific payload at CERN. Completed high-level sine sweep testing of the Vacuum Case and completed static and modal testing of the full payload. Completed installation and functional tests all detectors. Completed functional test of the magnet, including charging/discharging and filling. AMS-02 has been manifested on STS-134.

Major Changes Since Phase II Several hazards have been eliminated through design simplifications. – Radioactive elements in the TRD Gas Supply have been removed, eliminating AMS-02-F09. – Remotely Operated Electrical Umbilical Bracket folding mechanism has been removed. Other hazards have had additional controls added. – Third MMOD shield added to reverse side of TRD Gas tanks. – Magnet maximum operational current reduced from 460A to 424A. – Composite Overwrapped Pressure Vessels have had additional inspections and analysis. – Payload Attachment System has undergone additional analysis and testing.

Major Changes Since Phase II Design of SFHe tank emergency vent changed to correct performance issues – Design modifications presented to PSRP/SRP at special TIM in October – Significant additional testing performed to validate new design, with final testing witnessed by PSRP representatives. CGSE configuration and operations modified based on lessons learned during magnet commissioning and CERN operations. Power Distribution System has been modified to reduce potential current draw during transfer operations. UPS system returned to vendor for repair and additional testing after qualification testing issues.

Major Remaining Milestones After completion of functional testing at CERN, AMS-02 will undergo EMI and Thermal Vacuum Testing at ESTEC. Payload will arrive at KSC at the end of March to begin processing for flight. – Installation of STS/ISS interface components (ROEU, grapple fixtures, PAS, etc.) – Off-line and on-line testing of avionics. – Final verification of STS and ISS interfaces.

SVTL Overview Phase II Hazard Analysis listed 636 Safety Verifications. – 417 SVMs were closed or deleted prior to submittal of the Phase III Safety Data Package – 219 SVMs have been relocated to the SVTL. 64 were planned open work for after the Phase III review. 16 are open pending NASA approvals. 34 have since been closed. 105 remain open. Most of the remaining 105 planned for rapid closure following review.

Phase II Actions and Agreements Three action items assigned at the Phase II Review. – AI #1 – Fracture Control of the PAS Anti-Rotation Device (JSC/MSWG) – AI #2 – Fatigue Life Requirement (JSC/OB) – AI #3 – SFHe Tank and VC Factors of Safety (JSC/ES) First two items were closed successfully. Third action item was withdrawn. Twelve agreements were also defined at Phase II. All twelve have been completed. Details of each closure rationale have been provided in Section 7.0 of the Phase III Safety Data Package.

Presentation Overview Several systems will be discussed in more detail prior to the hazard report review based on PSRP comments. – Operations – Pressure Systems – Electronics and Power Systems – Batteries – Magnet and Magnetic Fields – Flight Heaters and MLI
